Durabond, it might be a good idea if you post some closeup pictures of the Decals on the door. I was reading up on importing from Canada and the first they they say is to see if the car has a sticker that says it conforms to U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)

Here is a link to the California DMV page on importing vehicles. I'm 99 44/100 percent certain that California is the toughest to import. It looks doable with some effort.

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1...k/ch12/ch12_15

The key seems to be getting a letter from manufacturer that it conforms to US Federal Emissions except for minor labeling which I believe is the case with the 1M and importing the vehicle through US customs so you get proof of importing, not just driving it across. If it wasn't loaded, I would probably be trying to do this. I think the price is very fair for mileage and importing effort.

Durabond, I would recommend while you have it listed that you contact BMW of Canada on Monday and ask them if they can get you a letter that says this vehicle conforms to US Federal standards except for the minor door decals. Then you can have it ready in case someone in US wants it. Then the buyer can contact a US Customshouse Broker to have the paperwork to import via Customs done. Probably $150 or so. My mom is a US customshouse broker so I can ask her. Customs is a pain in the butt. down here in the south, you drive it into the Customs facility and wait in line for a few hours until they check the car numbers and make sure you are not smuggling maple syrup or Canadian hockey player front tooth implants into the US. You have to be nice to some of these really arrogant jerks but if your're lucky, they could be car fans too.

Once you have the customs documents that it was imported legally and the letter from manufacturer that it conforms to US standards, etc. Then it depends on each state's inspection rules, smog test rules etc. Luckily, it's coming from Canada and they share the same lighting rules, etc whereas cars from Mexico have euro headlights, etc.

I hope someone gets this!

Nachob, I truly appreciate the post. Thanks. Rare to find people this positive on forums.

I have some good contacts at BMW Canada who may be able to help me out with getting that letter. When it comes to exporting and customs paperwork I have imported cars from the US in the past (for racing), so I should be able to assist somewhat with those issues. I would love to have this car sent to someone who truly appreciates it.

You have set a great price-point that would make it worthwhile for sure for someone. It would be so cool to have the KM speedo in the USA and the story to go with it!

Let us know if you can get the letter!

This is tempting actually. What's involved to have the cluster converted to us customary?

There has to be a few clusters out there from wrecked 1M's ... But I think you can change the units on the iDrive at least on the small screen in the middle of the cluster.

I used to drive an E46 M3 that was imported from the US, but that had the dual unit dials!

I'm pretty sure you don't have too but Anyway, that's the coolest part!

It will freak everyone out....when they see 100 km/h roll by on the freeway.

Even if you wanted, I have seen faceplates that you can stick on that have MPH.

I totally forgot about that programmable small screen. Already have the tools to do that too so easy.

Very interesting indeed.

Sorry for the delay guys, good news:

There is a sticker (underneath the hood) that does states the Conformance to the following regulations:
- US EPA T285 LDV
- California: LEV II PC

In the door there is also a sticker that confirms the confirmation of conformance to Canadian regulations. So it seems like 1M's bound for North America were all the same (except Canadian cars have daytime running lights - which is a very safe feature and it is ridiculous that this law hasn't been adopted in the US). I will upload the photos later.

Letter of conformance from BMW is in the works and is not an issue.

Lastly, and probably the best news:
- New Price: $39,500 USD

I spoke to a lady at DOT and she says the letter from the manufacturer stating that it conforms to US DOT regulations except for minor labeling. ie Decal on door and speedo is key. She said that for personal use, the letter would exempt the car for the minor stuff. If there is something like headlights that have to be swapped, then it has to go through registered importer which adds hassle but I'm pretty sure it meets DOT standards except for the labeling.

The Poster thought he might be able to get the letter. Then it could be imported through a customs broker for a fee with a bond which, whole thing probably under $500 plus 2.5% duty then whatever your state charges in state taxes and registration. The duty part above is based on reading the info, not from the DOT lady. She told me I would have to contact customs. If someone can get a letter, this would be a great deal, especially if you live near Toronto.

I'm laying low for a bit and decided I really want a no nav car but this is a great deal and would live to have the KM speedo.

Should have the letter in my hand sometime next week!

Also forgot to note that I have a Carfax report as well as a safety performed by a BMW dealer.

With the letter in hand, this will be a great deal, especially for someone in the east coast. I found another great article in Jalopnik. Since Durabond will get the letter, this makes it much simpler and Jalopnik addresses it in the 2nd importing scenario called "Substantially Similar" car. And it has the California Low Emmission Vehicle decal which is the most stringent one. I hope someone nabs this, it would be so cool to have the KM speedo and you don't have to change it under the clause.
