Way to get Castrol 0-40 European formula
My local Walmart was out of the 5 qt jugs of Castrol 0-40 that used to meet BMWs LL-01 designation. So I googled it and found that I could buy from Walmart and have it delivered to the house for the same $25 and change price it normally is in the stores - for a 5 qt jug. But you have to buy $35 of merchandise to get free shipping. Not hard for me to add another $10 of stuff I want from Walmart. So I ordered the oil and some towels and had them in 2 days. Good alternative.
But then I learned that Castrol is no longer LL-01 rated. It still says it is on the Walmart website but if you go to the Castrol website it does not claim that rating. Has it gone the way of Mobil 1 0-40 European? Some claimed Mobil 1 changed their oil but I tended to believe the viewpoint that the oil didn't change, BMW just did a deal with Castrol. But if that is what is occurring who is the deal with now. Another viewpoint was that Mobil-1 didn't change but they did not want to submit to BMW's testing or something like that. Anybody know?

Hopefully my link works, but there is actually a forum specifically for Oil (Lubricants in general really). Here is the link to the discussion on Castrol losing that LL-01 certification: https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum...01#Post5038902

I've been buying mine on Amazon. It's still LL01 per the bottle.

I read BITOG often - good discussions on oil and additives.
The disconcerting part of all this approval stuff for me is the fear that BMW is basing approvals on commercial issues or meeting CAFE or EPA standards, or some combination. I wish we could find out if the oil actually changed formulation in a way to be a potential problem in a particular range of engines, ie N52, N54, N55.

Check out Motul 0W40 online at Walmart. Has LL-01 rating still, has a much higher synthetic percentage (Motul is considered synthetic in Germany, Castrol is not), and is really cheap.

I found some threads on Bob is the Oil Guy but not that one, thanks.
It seems like we will not know what changed, the oil or just the certification to LL-01. The consensus on the oil website seems to be that the oil is still good due to it's other ratings. Possibly better than the 5W-40 which still has the LL-01 rating. As long as I can at reasonable cost, I will probably buy a LL-01 rated oil.
