135i Steptronic Question?

Hey guys

Drove a DCT 135i yesterday and the paddle shifting was really nice, im coming from a Golf GTi which is exactly the same as the DCT in the paddle shifting respect.

Im probably not going to get the DCT because i dont want to spend money on a brand new 135i, so was wondering does the Step work the same way? Upshift on right, downshift on left.

I was watching some weird movie saying you had to use your thumb to downshift or something? and that just didnt make sense to me.

Im hoping that its just exactly like the DCT minus the Dual Clutch obviously in terms of shifting up and down!

Please someone shine some light on this for me

THANKS!

Pull for upshifts, push downshifts. You get used to it easy enough(if its your only paddle shift car with different setup) My Corvette is push-upshift, pull down. I forget sometimes going from car to car.

you are referring to the paddle shift on the steering wheel right? Im seems kinda stupid (cant really judge having not driven it) but it makes more sense for one side to do up and the other to do down shifts.

I wonder if you can get it changed.

So effectively you can up and down shift on either side of the steering wheel? wtf.

Yes the paddles on the wheel. You can also shift manually with the stick. Pull Back- up shift, push forward-down.
I think I read where the shift mech can be changed. not 100% sure though.

I may be in the minority, but I really like how the step shifters work. I can keep one hand on the wheel and one hand.. I guess on the shifter because that's where I naturally like to keep it. But if you have something in your hand, it's easy to upshift and downshift just with your one hand on the wheel, pull for upshift, push for downshit.

And the DCT paddles retrofit isn't that hard or expensive to do if that's more your style. I know around here in NJ, Autocouture motoring offered to do it for me for a couple hundred bucks.

Here's a thread about it:

INDEED! If i had a choice i would not change a thing. I REALLY like being able to shift or downshift with one hand for casual driving...let's me drink my coffee and have fun at the same time..For serious driving i alway's have both hands on the wheel...but i like the option to shift and downshit with one hand and would never consider changing it like the newer set up.

Also to be fair I have driven several DSG cars, even before I bought my 135 (crosshoped it with an A3) and I couldnt figure out the left down up right thing when the wheel was turned. I always hit the wrong paddle.

I also like my current step paddle setup. it let's me shift up/down when I'm making a sharp turn without having to fish for the right paddle
