What size LM-25s would you recommend on the 135i's OEM 18'' rims? The site guides you to select 225/40 all around, I think, but 225/40 front, 235/50 rear is another option, right? Thanks.

Do you recommend rotating the tires on the 135 coupe? I have read that the 3 series have had problems with the RFT tires after 10,000+ miles with a lot of tire road noise. Some say it is because the tires wear unevenly creating the noise and both Tirerack&Bridgestone have talked about rotating the RFT's every 5000-8000 miles to prevent the uneven wear and noise. I wonder if this would also apply to the 135 coupe. As you know BMW doesn't recommend rotating tires. Also since the front and rear tires are different sizes you could only rotate left to right and right to left. What are you thoughts? Thanks Eric |

Many thanks for your response. I'm not sure I fully understood your explanation. I have a 135 coupe with M-sport pkg and OEM tires/rims. Why would you have to mount and dismount the tires? Couldn't you just move the tire&rim as one unit from the right front to the left front and then move the left front tire/rim to the right front. Then do the same for the back wheels? I gather if they are directional then this may not be kosher since you are reversing the direction of rotation, but can it be done and is it a good way to even out tread wear (the Bridgestone response below seems to suggest that)? How do you know these tires are directional, they do seem asymmetrical in that one side is marked "outside", but how do you know they are directional? I found the info on rotation from another forum where someone with a 2006 BMW 330i wrote to Bridgestone and they recommended changing tires right to left and left to right. See the response below. Thanks Eric Your email was forwarded to me for response. From your description of the situation you are experiencing with your BMW tires I would conclude that your tires have an irregular wear phenomenon we call "heel-and-toe" wear. Excessive heel-and-toe wear can lead to the noise you mentioned. Irregular wear can happen when tires are not rotated and the direction the tires turn is not reversed periodically. Tires that are not rotated tend to wear more rapidly on one edge of each tire element or "button" causing a saw tooth type wear pattern. As tires are rotated, wear evens out. The tires on your BMW are Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFT ultra high performance runflat tires developed specifically for BMW. These tires use an asymmetric tread pattern to provide the wet and dry grip required by BMW. Asymmetric tread patterns have one side that should always be mounted outside (identified by the 'OUTSIDE' marking on the tire sidewall), but still allow rotation. Also, your tires are different size front and rear, so the recommended rotation pattern is to cross the tires on an axle (i.e. Left Front to Right Front; Right Front to Left Front; and the same for the rear axle). This will reverse the direction of rotation and even out the heel-and-toe (saw tooth) wear. Our experience is that it may take a couple of thousand miles to completely even out the irregular wear, but that you should start hearing a difference within a couple of hundred miles. Further, by way of prevention, I would recommend rotating any new set of tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. My apologies, Eric. It has been a long day.
The OEM tires are asymmetrical just as my summer tires are. Thanks for calling me on that before I misinformed others. If they were directional it would never be recommended to rotate them and reverse the tread due to hydroplaning concerns. If you never drove the car in rain, or were tracking it for example, that would be a situation where you could safely do that, but only then. Since they are asymmetrical, you can rotate them side to side anytime you like. Sorry again about any confusion. Gill

OK, Gill, interested in those Borbet LV5 wheels you guys have listed as being available in a couple weeks with LM-25 205/50 mounted. A couple questions.....
-The anthracite color is hard to grasp in the photo. Looks pretty close to black. I have a black sapphire 1. Is the color close to that or closer to our stock dark grey "diffuser" under the rear bumper? -Estimated avail. is listed as 11/26. You really expect to have them then/shipping to me mounted before the end of the month? I could wait that long but not much more. -The site recommends 205/50 tires. You agree? How would you rate the gains of that or any 17'' size Blizzak vs. mounting the 225/40/18 size on the stockers? I get serious snow up here at 6400ft. I have a 325xiT for the bad days but I want to be able to drive my new 1 at least SOME this winter. Thanks a ton. Gill- Would you recommend 17x8 Sport Edition F10's on Dunlop SP 205/50/R17 or 18x8 Sport Editions F10's on Dunlop SP 225/40/18? After shipping the price is going to be only $134 more for the 18''s. I've noticed many have gone with 17''s, is more sidewall better for winter?
