Non-Working Audio

I have this problem as well. My SA said that he hasn't had anyone else with this issue, and everytime the car goes in for service everything works...

It has happened to me about ten times in five months of ownership...

This is how I alleviated this problem. Keep in mind I don't have comfort access...when I put the key in the ignition and immediately turn on the car without letting the radio turn on first (as it does when you put the key in the ignition), it freezes and the radio won't work.

Now I just wait 2 seconds and then turn the engine on once I put the key in the ignition. I don't know if you guys have CA or not.

I have a 3 week old 135i Convertible with premium sound and comfort access. I have experienced this 4 times in the three weeks I have had the car. I start the car and I cannot get anything to work FM, Sat, IPOD..... If I shut off the car and then restart it appreas to "reset" and work again. The service manager at my delarship said that engineers are working on a software fix for a similar problem reported where the AM radio did this. I just reported it this week - so I am going to wait to see if a software fix is forthcoming.

This happened to me as well. I have Premium HiFi, HD Radio, and iPod 6FL. When I tried the other key, the radio came back to life. I then tried the other key again and the radio worked. No problems since.

the software has been out for awhile, long beach bmw is a little slower than the rest of the dealers

Just so you know you have more company out there. I have a 128i with premium hi fi and the HD radio (~July 1, 2009 production date). Same problems as the rest of you...radio actually went out the first time on the drive home from taking delivery! I turned around and showed my CA ... but wasn't too upset since I'd seen your posts about it. Service guys were already gone for the day. It's happened about 5 times in the last 2 weeks. I've been dragging my feet in scheduling a service appt because I don't want to give my new baby up so soon even for a day! So far I've managed getting it to work every time by getting out...locking the doors...then unlock get in and it works.

My 135i with Premium HiFi was completed 7/2 and is at the VPC as we speak. Will I have to see this and complain or is it likely to be re-programmed before delivery?

My radio would not work a couple days ago. Drove to Fry's with a dead radio, no power. When I unlocked the car after shopping the radio worked. Hopefully this won't continue to be a problem.

So it seems like this problem is occuring mostly in cars that have HD radio and the Hi Fi sound system. Interesting...

(see attached bulletin) and that they did have the fix. So next time I drop off my car, I'll get the update.

It says that the software is expected to be available in September 2009. How do they have it already?

Don't know - I can only assume that September was the ETA and they got it early.

A temproary fix is just to unbuckle your seatbelt until the chime starts. Magically the audio comes back to life.

Got in the car this morning and the radio was completely dead, nothing on the display, not even the time.

Did the reboot couple of times, got out of the car closed and opened, to no avail. Had to drive to work without the radio.

An hour later, before taking the car to the dealer, I went and put the key in the ignition... it works liek nothing happened.

I guess I'll be waiting on the software fix as well...

Not that it matters since there appears to be a fix on the way, but the same thing happened to me today, except worse..

The audio didn't work this morning, so I tried shutting off, locking/unlocking, unbuckling and waiting for chime, etc, but nothing worked. I was in a hurry, so half hour drive without audio. Then 3 hours later I go back to the car expecting it to work for the ride home, since it had a chance to sit for a while, but still nothing. So another half hour drive without audio. Then 5 hours after that, I go out to the garage, STILL not working.

I do love the sound of the engine, but at that point I was not about to drive another half hour without audio, so I popped the trunk and disconnected the negative battery, which finally fixed it (although it also killed active and power steering for a minute after restarting.. so be careful)

And I do have the premium hi-fi but no HD radio.
