$1,000 bucks for 1 wheel??
Just found a small (read: hairline) crack in my front right wheel.
BMW told me that I need to buy a new wheel and get them to put it on/align it. Total: $973.33 breakdown: $482 - wheel itself $116 - labor to put the wheel on / take old one off $299 - total car alignment $26 - bob stem is this right? can i do better than this? |

$116 for mounting and ballancing ONE wheel sounds STEEP to me! Should be like $40 max.
$299 for a wheel alignment also sounds steep to me. You should not need a new valve stem. The valve stem is part of the TPMS. You will need to have it installed on the new wheel. AND that will require a special low Nm torque wrench. Needless to say I think you CAN do better than this "deal". lol |

That sounds about right for a BMW dealership's initial quote. I would try to work out a cheaper price. Alignment may not be needed unless you feel that the impact that cracked the wheel also put the car out of alignment. 115 to mount and balance one wheel is very high as well. I think my dealership quoted me around 40 per wheel, and maybe around 199 for alignment. (Do you have active steering? that will make the cost much higher).
I had the same dilemma and saved a couple hundred dollars doing it outside of BMW. I bought the wheel online for about $400. Paid $60 to unmount my previous wheel, swap the TPMS, and mount the new tire (including valve-stem). I did this at a prestigious race shop in my area...if you go to a normal tire store, they will probably charge about 40 dollars to do this. Alignment outside is probably about $120 from a good shop. I say screw them and their inconsistent, inflated prices for both service and parts. Take the car elsewhere...(you can tell I'm a bit bitter!) Tim

Which wheel type do you have?
Other than that since you don't mention new rubber too, I'd say yes you can do a lot better. Even with new rubber it's still high. I'd suggest looking up ordering the wheel yourself online and get an independent shop to mount it for you. (Might also be worth having them look at the "cracked" wheel if this was a surprise finding by the dealer). -dave |

I had to replace a 203M (double-spoke M wheels, 17") after an accident where a middle aged mofo woman driving a Merc wagon side-swiped me after driving on the wrong side of the road.
Replacement cost for the wheel was $918AUD - and that was the wheel alone, without tyre refitting, balancing etc. |

Retail is $361 (assuming you have the 18" 264 wheel) for the wheel. The other charges are astronomical.

Tischer in MD has it on getbmwparts.com for $290. Even with cross country shipping I have to believe you'd save at least $100 on it.
I've dealt with Ticsher's parts service before and have always been happy. -dave Edit: Also found partsonline.com for $123, but that sounds like "too good to be true" price. Outside of finding it via Froogle, I know nothing about this place so I'm not speaking for them. Last edited by gnat; 08-04-2010 at 10:33 PM.. |

I went to the same shop that my uncle uses for his sub 9 second chevy.
It was a total of $250 to dismount all four old tires, mount new tires, and align the car...after my dealer botched it. Get this the car was in spec but it was to the maximum tolerance on one side and the minimum tolerance on the other. It was also toe ined like crazy. Actully ot cost me $350 cause I dropped some decent tips because I know how much low profile tires and rfts suck to deal with. |

Keep in mind several factors....
The wheel price seems a bit high, but not astronomical considering what dealer prices usually are for parts (especially wheels, I know on my volkswagen replacing 1 18" wheel can run over $400 for the wheel alone). Alignment seems rediculous. As others have mentioned do you have active steering? Perhaps this can add alot to the cost, but usually an alignment should run you no more than around $100. Mounting/Balancing of tire is also outrageous. However, I do know that run-flats (I don't see you mentioning if it is a runflat tire or not) cost significantly more to mount, which is one of the reasons I steer clear of them in the first place. If it isn't a runflat "normal" mounting/balancing should run in the range of $20-$40 per tire depending on where you go. My local tire shop does $22 per 17" wheel on my VW, when I had the dealer do it it was more like $33/wheel. So in summation, yes, that sounds a tad outrageous. |
