it wont work with apple cause the nfc is used for apple pay and it activates apple pay. you can only use with a samsung and it cant be on verizon. you also have to touch the phone to the door handle. also not able to remote start with it. pretty pointless unless you just straight up forget your keys and just so happen to have an non verizon samsung phone.

Also this is not true. The iPhone 7 and higher have built in nfc.

The iPhones 7, 8 and X have NFC for payments but additionally, with iOS 11 and an NFC App, they can read NFC tags.

Respectfully (and with emphasis added): It doesn't matter what entity is causing the incompatibility to a consumer. The consumer just wants it to work. If it doesn't, BMW shouldn't release it in the first place until that compatibility issue is solved, no matter what the cause is. Period.

It's bad business -- particularly in this case since BMW favors Apple/iOS over Android with nearly every other mobile-enabled offering. I really don't understand why you don't see this as a problem when so many others who've read this thread do.

I do sometimes. Especially if I’m in a hurry. I thought that was the point of wireless car play.
I think of it in regards to mobility and comfort while driving. I empty all my pockets when i drive. Personal preferences! I do wear skinny jeans all the time and means my iPhone would be essentially inserted at this point.

I’m going to translate what you just said, so maybe you’ll understand how you sound:

“Since Apple won’t let me have this feature, BMW shouldn’t let ANYONE have it.”

Respectfully, that’s idiotic. Your gripe isn’t with BMW, it’s with Apple. Maybe if enough of you complained in THEIR direction, or stopped buying iPhones, Apple would start letting their phones do things Droids have been able to do for years. But blaming BMW because of a limitation Apple or Verizon put on your phone is asinine and pointless, and expecting BMW to not offer a feature to people who CAN use it just because you choose to use a phone or service provider that can’t, is selfish and flat out stupid. THAT is "bad business". And I have an iPhone, too.

The BMW Digital Key allows you to turn your smartphone into a car key. With the key, you'll be able to lock and unlock your BMW and even start the engine without needing a physical key. Your digital key will be stored securely in the BMW Connected App. The option 'Digital Key for 5' allows you to share it with up to 5 other people. You will be provided with a key card that has the same functions as the one on your phone.

In this video, we'll show you how to install the Digital Key, how it works, and how to share it with your family and friends.

Utterly useless. Biometric is the way to go.

Seems like a solution in search of a problem. This has zero allure to me.

Funny that companies often choose iOS first when there are way more Android phones on the market. Plus everything pretty much uses Android as the backbone OS. Except Apple products. But your touchscreen car, smart fridge, etc. Have Android under the skin, nothing has an Apple OS under the skin.

The idea is pretty cool but the execution seems lackluster.

BMW charging £70 (or whatever $ equivalent) for a 5 keys is always a nice touch though. We know we're charging you for a digital copy but at least you get 5.

Now I can drive my rented (leased) BMW with my rented (leased) iPhone, pay monthly for entertainment system and soon pay monthly for a key. Ownership is so yesterday. Welcome to neo-capitalism. </end rant>

Interesting to finally see BMW joining the competition.
Looking forward to see this being integrated in the future models!

I'm interested in this answer as well. Saw on the G30 board someone posting that all G3X built after August 2018 would have the hardware for it?

But I haven't seen any clear confirmation/documentation elsewhere.

How about BMW works on their connected app features and allow real climate control not just running a useless fan.

Only the 2019 X5 is compatible as of now it shows. I'll upload the info. Sorry for the way it came out. It's a PDF so it's not very user friendly to upload in these forums.

Here's the link for all the info you need though: https://www.bmwusa.com/explore/connecteddrive.html
