Crankshaft position error/DSC error - info for future reference
So, been dealing with a bad crank position sensor on my car, finally getting parts in today, just putting everything here incase someone runs into these issues in the future.
08 135i - 56k miles 6 speed AT - steptronic I've got the following codes: P0335/2A94 - Crankshaft position sensor A circuit malfunction P1727/5E1A - Signal error CAN/ Coil outlet (dump) shorted rear left/internal error / DSC ECU intern / DSC internal 3100 shadow code - disables boost solenoid/limp mode shadow code Symptoms: Engine in limp mode Trans in limp mode - 3rd/4th gear only Long cranking, but will start and idle somewhat normally (assuming this is because it can still reference the cam position sensor and make an educated guess at where the crank is at. If both failed or there was a short somewhere causing both to go out, it would probably not start) I've been reading up on the DSC code and according to a thread on bimmerfest, it is related to the crankshaft position sensor going bad. It appears that the trans ECU/traction control system is tied into the crankshaft position sensor, im assuming to get a better check of the engine RPM's so it can do whatever calculations it needs to do. Will report back tonight if replacing the crankshaft position sensor resolves all the codes (i think it will) Reference thread |

Thanks for this, explained what I just ran into this morning. I had wondered if that's what it was anyway when it took forever to start out of nowhere - not shifting past fourth gear was the big hint that you have here.

I wasn't expecting this based on the DIY steps here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tech...eplacement.htm Is the E90 that much different from my E82 (2008 128i)? So far I've used a lot of E90 DIY steps on other jobs. |

It's literally a half hr DIY job if you buy the parts and have the tools. |

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I'm having an issue with a faulty crankshaft sensor.
That said, I just discovered and wanted to point out that this part (and labor) is covered under the SULEV warranty (150k mi or 15 years, whichever is lower) for anyone who has an N51 engine and is in one of the states that covers it. (Attached a screenshot below.) Original PDF here: https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/n....927931/page-2 Perk, I get to drive a loaner car for the day. That said, the 428s aren't that exciting to drive. Quick, but not exciting. Or maybe it's bc they're loaner cars so I don't want to push them too hard.
