For me it's definitely the ND Miata if something happens to the 1er. I wanted a 987 Cayman, but at this point, I don't think I would trade a 7 year old German car for a 6 year old (at least) German car. The new Cayman with electric steering and a turbo 4 doesn't do it for me.
Also, there are 4 generations of the Miata... NA, NB, NC, ND. They just bumped power up to 181 for this year, so it should be roughly equivalent power to weight as a stock 128i. |

Another hardtop Miata at the beach today. White with a tinge of grey. Walked up to this one. Stick. And three analog gauges at the center of the dash. This car is *beautiful*, but WOW is it tiny. Still, I want one. xoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Didn't Mike and Ant recently refurbish an Opel GT on Wheeler Dealers? Beautiful car, I think the proportions are better than on the look alike Corvettes of that vintage.

I would agree, but Mazda’s new automatics are excellent. If you had a life situation which precluded you from getting stick, the auto is actually not too far behind in enjoyment. I really like driving my wife’s auto Mazda6. Best automatic I’ve ever driven, by far. Manual mode gives you tons of control. You can lug the engine or keep it at redline and it only seems to force a shift when it absolutely has to.

Right now, these are the options that I'd replace my 135i with:
If I could afford it: A 4-seat Porsche 911. If I wrote it off and had some spare cash to chip in: A 4-door manual E90 M3. If I wrote it off and had no spare cash: Another 135i. Damn, these cars are CHEAP now! If was trading up because the kids moved out and I no longer needed 4 seats: A Lotus Elise. |

I would have to go with a GT350 or possibly the new Supra. Still thinking about test driving the 2019 M2 Comp- With that being said, I am not too crazy about buying first year production cars.

Currently, I'm thinking of test driving a 2015 Porsche Boxster GTS. I think there is a dealership here or there that has one in stock. The 135is is nice but a well equipped GTS looks intriguing. They're still a bit expensive right now and I'm definitely in no position to be spending more money... and the 135is is finally not bankrupting me outside of tires feeling like they're constantly being replaced. The new 718 models all make more power and torque. The sound of the car is half of why I get these things. It needs to be loud as hell and sound great. I think the Boxster GTS does well there from videos I've seen. Seems comparable to the 135is - if not better. In my mind, it'd almost be a side-grade unless I got a fully loaded Boxster GTS. I don't think it'd be a monumental upgrade but it's hard to find better smaller sized convertibles with decent power. The alternative is modding my 135is and getting a tune. I'm not big on it. I like keeping things factory and don't want to deal with *more* stuff breaking on this thing. Jeebus. Last edited by TridenTBoy; 11-27-2018 at 12:32 PM.. |

Porsches do tend to be more reliable, but get ready when something does go wrong or you have to do routine maintenance. It's way more expensive. Here's a fun anecdote from my 911 Targa with the glass roof. There was a little window shade that retracted under the glass roof to provide cover from the sun through the glass roof. Well, a little plastic tab broke off the track sunshade track once, so the shade no longer retracted into position, making the car a searing greenhouse in the sun. I brought the Targa in to the dealer seemingly to replace these little plastic tabs and get the shade back on track...but it turns out they had to remove the entire roof of the car, so it was a procedure in the thousands of dollars to replace a tiny plastic part. |

I had my manual 128i for 8 years (bought it brand new). Always loved the car but as a car guy I always thought about new cars, just never pulled the trigger since I could not think of a car that would satisfy my needs as well as this car, just a perfect little package. The 2 series never excited me, I actually find it bland and boring, the current Mustang GT would be great for the engine but the overall comfort and quality turns me off (plus I need the convenience of the back seat for dropping my kids to school). I started toying with the idea of an Alfa Giulia Ti but $52k for a 4 cylinder is a hard one to swallow for me (and the fact it is a 4 cylinder). I recently started looking too closely at a slightly used MB C63 AMG and decided that was the right substitute, for the first time, I am serious about replacing my beloved 128i.
