If you actually read that interview you can see that they are deceptively playing with the interviewer. ("With Wry smile - Norbert Reithofer said" : "a 1-M that could be a good idea")
Why is there prototypes in testing in Scandanavia and Garching? Last edited by SCOTT26; 01-28-2010 at 04:02 PM.. |

There is certainly a market for the M1. I would be very happy to fork out the same amount as the old M3 pricing - which is roughly the same as the M3 Sedan. To me the M1 would be the new M3.
End of the body shape of E82 I don't think will matter too much as we know previously the E46 M3 was still in production well into E90 and E92 life cycle. Seriously, everyone's lease would be coming up when they introduce the M1. I think many 135i owners with their lease coming up will be happy to move to the M1, knowing that would be the last inline 6 that would ever be produced for a 1 series. While the 'is' version might not have get people to swap over. Let's hope we see the M1 at Geneva . Besides we know they have been spotted testing, so we know definitely it is in development.

Is there not a thread a few posts down that confirms the car by the M division, along with blurry pictures of a prototype and videos of a car testing?
The BMW associate is clearly just messin' with the interviewer. |

i disagree. An M version of the x5 is not going to take business away from any other car/truck in their lineup.
I can not say the same about an M1. It will take away from the M3, the 335i and of course the 135i. It would blur the lines of too many models. From a business point of view, I fail to see the need for such a beast. The 135i really does not compete with many cars at the same price point. And the few cars that it does compete with, it destroys (in terms of perfomance)

This makes me happy. If the 1-series M came out, I'd want that instead of my 135.

i disagree, the next generation 1 series would be enough to keep enough people interested. Throw a new body style, 30 more hp, dual clutch gearbox, a few other goodies, and people who still can handle a smaller car will go for it. hey, i want to see an m1, but if the new style was a 145i, alot of people would transition to that. my last car was an e92. I don't think traditional logic comes into play with a niche car such as the 1 series.

All of this "unconfirmed" information I have heard about this new E82 based 1 series, should it be true, points to a 135is designation.
IMHO - there is simply no way BMW would need to send a car with these minor mods off to M camp - not to mention this late in the production cycle. That said, I would love to see BMW do a retro E30 M3, in the likeness of the Ford GT update , as that captured the styling purity of the '60s with the mechanical prowess of today. It would be nice to see a lightweight 4 cyl turbo under the hood. ...a 135is would be fine for now, but that's all it's really going to be even if they market it with a nicer sounder badge... my .02

apple to apple next time please.
u got station wagon, a hatch, a coupe and few sedans in there... None of those complete with 1 series directly or even in price.. STi/EVO/370Z would be better comparison.. And 135 doesnt destroy any of them in performance.. Quite the opposite in some cases.. |

I do not really like this logic but it seems to me that a turbo 4 would take less sales away from the 135i. The WRX/Mazda 3speed crowd would not have an issue with the turbo 4 and the step up could make sense to them. People willing to mod their cars probably still buy the 135i. People who don't even know what's under the hood go M1.
I don't know how many sales BMW thinks they need to make the M1 viable. But the volume of the 1s is not very high. So taking away 135i sales might be an obstacle a 4 banger would help with. It would also be a splashy way to introduce a 4 in the U. S.. Just a thought. Jim

They're not going to alter the bodywork for a 135is, and the prototype clearly has tires that won't fit under the standard fenders. It's not unheard of for //M cars to contiue production after the standard model has already transistioned to a new body style, so I don't see the fact that it's late in the model cycle being a huge issue. It will give them some additional mileage from the existing chassis, and that means high profit margins because the tooling cost has already been covered. |

and yes it does destroy the c300, is250 and g37, all of which I driven. i wouldnt even waste my time driving sti's or 370z, they just dont appeal to me at all (not into the boy racer thing) i actually drove a friends sti a couple of years ago, and it had no low end torque. that car needs direct injection, that and getting rid of the hood scoops and exageratted wing.
