135i N55 Performance Upgrades - Need Advice
Hi y'all, I just got my 2013 BMW 135i a few days ago and want to start buying some parts for it. I’m located in Socal in the San Diego area and if you know any great shops around here, down to the LA area, or people that are great at installing BMW parts please comment down below.
I've compiled a list of the parts I am looking at and linked them down below. I am also looking into an aggressive exhaust setup (that pops and crackles, but may need a tune for that) that doesn’t have that bad of droning lol. Possibly thinking of going straight pipe just to experience max loudness lol, paired with a catless downpipe I’m pretty sure I will spit flames and it will be ridiculously loud. I would appreciate some great exhaust set ups that are aggressive, thanks ahead of time! Please let me know your thoughts and if I should consider any other mods. N55 JB4 - plug and play VRSF 3.5″ Ceramic Coated Catless Downpipe - https://www.vr-speed.com/vrsf-3-5-st...tless-downpipe VRSF Chargepipe Upgrade Kit - https://www.vr-speed.com/vrsf-charge...i-n54-n55.html HKS Super SQV4 Universal Blow Off Valve (love the sound) - https://www.vr-speed.com/hks-super-s...008-ak001.html VRSF Performance HD Intercooler Upgrade Kit 07-12 (Not sure if it will fit for 2013) - Also should I get 5” or 7.5” https://www.vr-speed.com/vrsf-7-fron...2-e90-e92.html They are currently out of stock with the VRSF so maybe BMS? https://burgertuning.com/collections...nt-intercooler BMS N55 Performance Intake - https://burgertuning.com/collections...nting-hardware I think that is pretty much good for me on internals unless I must have some other parts as preventative measures. Trying to achieve close to 380-400whp. I appreciate any input you may have, once again thanks! |

I've got pretty much the same setup being installed as we speak, however some correct me if I'm wrong but there in no BOV on the N55 but a diverter valve built into the turbo.
Cheers. |

First off, don't go JB4 or BMS. I've only had issues with them.
For a tune use MHD, handheld android running 3.2 or higher. Super easy to use. Www.MHDtuning.com Any downpipe will be fine as long as it's catless, I personally have AR 4" catless. Heard great things about VRSF chargepipe, I went with ER only because they have the stock mounting bracket still. I've also got the ER turbo to Intercooler pipe. Most Intercooler will have this as an option I think. Intercooler 5" or 7.5" will be fine as the stock one heat soaks after a few pulls. I believe 7.5" requires some trimming. This is all I need to be FBO so I'm still waiting on it. N55 has a diverter valve that's attached to the turbo. GFB makes a DV+. This is a nice upgrade from stock. Higher boost does give you a higher pitched noise. I've noticed while revving past 4K you get compressor surge. Under full boost it will do the same but for I'd say .2 seconds. As for intake I would recommend INJEN. BMS isn't the best quality, but to each their own. An n55 making 380-400 with bolt ons isn't difficult but requires some tuning and maybe some e85.. or meth. Have not had my car on a dyno so not sure what my car makes. |

All looks good but as MatanKau said there is no BOV on the N55. The only thing you can do to upgrade the diverter valve is get a GFB DV+ (which I have and love, but requires access to turbo to install). You'll likely be around 360whp-380whp with all these mods combined and running an ethanol mix. I'd very much suggest doing the Charge Pipe ASAP as it absolutely will fail with increased boost of the JB4. Run only map 1 or map 5 until you've upgraded the DP AND IC. Then do the rest in this order; intercooler, downpipe, exhaust, intake. Hold out for the VRSF, it's been tested to be incredibly efficient over the other offerings, even more expensive options.

However, i recall reading a bunch of testing on those types of intakes; results showed they negatively affected performance. was not a material amount but it didn't help in anyway. |

VRSF intercoolers also come with the lower charge pipe (the part you were talking about). Intakes make almost no difference on these cars, just sound. This has been proven time and again with dyno results.

This is a solid list. You may want to consider reaching out to some sponsored vendors for a package deal The VRSF FMIC is back in stock too. I prefer the 7.5" Comp FMIC over the 5", especially in hotter climates. |
