$140 for intake cleaning...about right?
Car has all of 28 k miles on it.
90% of the time I'm local driving. Week ends i hit the high ways and push her. Just went in for the service because the car said so an the manager tells me that the tech is recommending a $140 air intake cleaning? Sounds ok but what do you think? Oh and $170 for allignemnt? Lots less work but costs more? WTF? |

What is involved in an air intake cleaning? Is he talking about cleaning the intake valves? If so $140 is a smoking deal.
If he is just talking about replacing the air filter or spraying something down the throttle body, seems very high. |

$140 for an air intake cleaning is a waste of money. It's replacing your filters, maybe spraying some antibacterial/antifungal in there.
The intake valve cleaning (the walnut shell blasting) cleans the valves and your intake manifold. My dealer asked about $800 for the service. A local shop does the same thing and only wants about $500. That would clean the carbon deposits off, but if the car isn't high mileage, it's a waste of money. I'm at 60K miles and only starting to think about doing it now.

BMW charges around $800-$1000, if your dealer has the equipment. I got in a GB in Chicago (Performance shop) and it was only $399.

it sounds like the dealership is quoting the intake valve cleaning for non-direct injection engines (e46's, for example). a proper intake valve cleaning job (scrubbing the valves or blasting the valves) will run minimum of $400 IMHO

I personally wouldn't go to Sears. Maybe the ones near you are better, but I got tires mounted at sears and they installed a set of clearly marked directional tires backwards, overfilled the tires by a LOT (despite telling them exactly what PSI I wanted), and then tried to charge me to fix their mistakes.

I'm pretty sure it's not a blasting service. If any of you are in SoCal, here is a group buy that is available.

Anyway, yes, I've had far better luck with them.
