I got my notice today.

A direct quote from the letter:

..."Once the remedy is available, a PCV blow-by heater component protection (a wiring harness repair kit with an additional fuse) will be installed in your vehicle. This complete repair will be performed for free and will take approximately one (1) hour but could take longer depending on what is required on your vehicle."

Eh?

That doesn't sound sketchy at all. In other words, there is no remedy, but we'll throw in a fuse to maybe keep it from melting.

I wonder if they would just give me the damn harness and let me rework it myself. I'm going to install a 3IM anyway and I can do it at the same time. I really hate anyone else working on my car.

I got my second notice from BMW this week, saying they now have the parts and to book an appointment.

However, when I called BMW Toronto on Saturday they said BMW hasn't yet shipped the repair kits to them, so they're going to call me back once they've received the kits.

Just got back from having the recall performed. In and out in a little over an hour and a half. Also, a big shout out to East Bay BMW. The very first thing my SA did after checking me in was to point out that I have a SULEV with an extensive 15 year, 150k mile warranty. Good to know they're on top of things.

Showed up for my apt and they told me they "only have the parts for some cars, but not mine. They don't expect to have the fix in for my car til early next year" even though it said online the parts are available. Worth noting that I have an N52 and this was in CA, so they might only have the N51 parts atm.

Except they are. BMW NA pays them for every one. Also, you don't think they're going to sneak in up sells? I guarantee you that at least 1 in every 4 is walking out with some extra service done. Oil leaks, water pumps, batteries, you name it and they're going to upsell it.

They will offer to top off your blinker fluid for only $30, because BMW. You'll think that sounds outrageous until you drive all over town trying to find a single auto parts store that has it in stock. After wasting an entire day and $50 in gas, you'll go back to the dealer and kick yourself for not paying the $30 in the first place.

Dealer recall profits are usually low and take up time that could've been used for much more profitable "normal" repairs. And lmao, like the majority of the crowd running around in N52 cars these days are gonna do any maintenance at all, let alone at dealership prices. I'd be amazed if the many of these cars were lucky enough to get a $20 conventional JiffyLube change. And preventative maintenance? Forget about it. Until their shit is on the side of the road most owners aren't gonna think about their car's upkeep cause sadly so many of these cars are being bought by badge buyers that can't afford or just don't care about maintenance. I see so many N52 cars in my area with bumpers falling off, blown out shocks, and tires balder than Jeff Bezos. Could definitely see more upselling happening during recall work for newer models, but definitely not E8X/E9X cars.

I had them top off the blinker fluid as well, why not? I read the DIY, and it's way too involved for me. I don't even own a 43 mm torx bit

Just had mine done yesterday on my 2013 128i n52. They gave me a used 2018 X6 x35i to play with. The dealership even emailed an inspection video of the car when it was up on the rack. I’m in Northern California and they have parts for the n52.
