Track Setup Thoughts
What's everyone's thoughts on a non-staggered setup for the track. Dials out some of the understeer and allows for tire rotation...
I'm thinking 245 or 255's all around on 8 or 8.5" wheels. Thoughs? Thanks Newb... |

I think it's a wonderful idea! Might not be economically viable, though.

I guess we'll just have to see. Not being able to rotate tires makes for significantly shorter tire life in my experience though. I'd try and run 17" wheels as well if possible. |

Question:
Are the hub bores of BMW's normally the same front and rear? I'm liking the idea of picking up either some older OEM or after-market 17's (maybe 4 rear OEM wheels in the 17 x 8/8.5 range if they will fit) and running 245 40's or 255 40's all around. |

I think simply changing the fronts to 245s will induce oversteer as the front will grip too hard. I am planning to use 225s for the front for track use. It's hard to say without experimenting.

you definitely would not get oversteer. it may help the under steer a bit but it would take something more drastic than a little extra tire to change the balance of the car that much.

Personally, I'm planning on 8.5"s all around with 245s. I might be worried about rubbing in the fron with 255s, but I'm not sure how much room to play with there is there.
Also, I use Yokohama Advan Neovas, with tend to have a very wide tread/section width for a given specificied width, so I'll probably stick to 245s the first time around. As for wheels, it depends what will fit the car. I love the enkei RPF1s I have on my S2K, they've held up very well, if that won't work, I'll probably use Volk RE30s, as they're not only light, but exceptionally durable, and available in +42 for 18x8.5s, which I HOPE is good enough to clear.

I'll try 17" wheels though for the tire budget, and definitely R comps (so hard to go back to street tires ) |

I've heard very good things about their performance, both street and track, wet and dry, but haven't driven them myself. I have a hard time trying something new, I love the Yokos too much.

Good stick and very consistent for a street tire. Wear is impressive as I have just about 2/3 life left. The Bridgetone guys said to expect grip all the way to the end and we will see. Most tires I have used in the past for all around work get hard as a rock after about 6 track days and street driving. They do tend to be temperature sensitive and go away if pushed hard for about 15 to 20 minutes. If you back off for a lap or two, they seem to come back again. So far very impressed with them and the price was really cheap at $165 per tire in that size.

I agree with that. I think at its weight, with no LSD, it'll probably struggle in AS. Can't see how its going to be able to put enough power down in those low speed corners. The 335 have shown that to be an issue. Certainly could be a real good BS car with a big front bar and some meatier rubber.... |

The Cayman does ok with an E Diff. We'll have to see. I'm thinking I'm going non staggered as step one, and hopefully that gets it good and neutral.
