Code P1014, Eccentric Shaft Sensor Failure

My car is a 128i with N51 SULEV engine. Three days ago, the Service Engine Soon light came on. A diagnostic tool borrowed from a local auto supply store indicated code P1014, failure of the VVT eccentric shaft sensor.

The SES light did not illuminate again after I checked the OBD, and it has remained off for the last three days.

Is it common for the eccentric shaft sensor to fail intermittently?

If you can, get the code checked from someone with a BMW scan tool. Foxwell, INPA, etc... The generic code that is given from auto store scanner can be misleading.

That being said, the eccentric shaft sensor is a common place for oil leaks and sometime oil even gets in the connector and can cause some weirdness.
