I hope they been changing mine every time I take it in for service..
Forget the free oil changes, I get BMW e-newsletters all the time for $70 oil changes which supposedly includes 7qts Castrol + oem filter. I once had a tech tell me the only way dealers get away with that kind of pricing is by only draining 5-6 quarts lol.

REALOEM says that BMW offers both new and remanufactured N51 engines for your 128i. Maybe they will give you the part number so you can tell which they ordered. The part number for a new engine is 11000445514 for an automatic and 11002149477 for a manual transmission. The remanufactured engines are 11000445515 and 11002149478. List price for the remanufactured engine is $10,428.38.

Crap. I hope it's the new one.

What does "remanufactured actually mean"?

I would push for them to agree to warranty the engine to the end of the original warranty term, but other than that everything seems to be pretty well taken care of.

Remanufactured means they went through it througly and replaced items that were worn and tightened up the clearances to be like a new engine. Exactly what is replaced is a function of the supplier but it should include all the rod and main bearings, at least rings for the pistons and possibly new pistons, camshaft bearings, new grinds on the valves and possibly new valves, etc. etc. It should cover the damage.

There is an argument to be made that a well done remanufactured engine is better than a new one. That argument hinges on the fact that engines warp around a little as they are used and settle out in a few years. A remanufactured engine starts with a block that has largely finished moving around. I don't personally think a remanufactured is better but I don't think it's worse as long as all the necessary items are checked or replaced. I would want to get more information on what the source of the motor does and what the warranty is.

I looked these up on REALOEM.COM and they are calling these short engines. Is that the same thing as a long block?

new engine = reset warranty
[engine = parts and parts have std warranty on them or no?]

i had a honda who's ac compressor failed [whos didn't] and r/r under warranty - blew up about 16k mi later and 10k out of warranty; got it r/r [paid for labor] w/o paying for part b/c new part = new part warranty ... so new engine gets fresh warranty though labor capped at old warranty limits worst case -

I wanted to close the loop on this once and for all.

The new engine has been installed and i'm currently enduring my second 1200mi break in period on the same vehicle. I've put 500 miles on it and the engine runs perfectly, sounds great, and feels peppier than before.

I'm very happy with the way the dealer handled this and i'm once again enjoying this great machine. Oil change at 1200 mi, take the revs up a bit to 1500 mi then i'll try some red line pulls after that.

Thanks for the update @jclaib7 often times we never hear the end result/fix. Sounds like your dealer is a standup one.

I'd recommend another oil change at 2,500 miles, then go to your normal OCI.

Good Luck,
Dackel
