I don't get why people are complaining about the manual because of stop-and-go traffic. Driving manual for me is natural at this point. I don't even think about it when I'm driving.

Given the sheer size of the US, most places don't have adequate public transportation. Couple that with a society that thinks public transportation is for the poor, and that everyone with means should have a car, and you have a recipe for HUGH traffic jams even in cities where there is public transport. In the Chicago area there is public transport in the city. It does get used. But, there are a LOT of city dwellers who still want their own car even if they only have to drive 1 or 2 miles to pick up their dry cleaning. But, there are a lot of people who work in the city but live in the suburbs, which can be 30+ miles away. Some "suburb" huh!? There aren't as many public transit choices, and the ones that do exist take a long time to get you where you're going. Add another aspect of this society, which is that no one seems to have enough patience to sit on a train for over 1-1/2 hours to go those 30+ miles, and you have a LOT of cars on our rather large and congested "express ways". I live in an area that is south and east of Chicago, about 40 miles out. There are a large number of people who live out here and work in the city. To get to a public transit train, we have to drive 20 minutes north to get to the trains. There are no public transport options to get there. Once you get to the train, you park, wait for the train, get on, and then start your 20 mile trip, which then hits a LOT of stops before spitting you off in the city. With the trip to the station, the commute to work can take 1.5 hours and more. That's 3 hours of commuting added to at least an 8 hour work day. So, people opt to drive. But, when they do that traffic is heavier and it can still take 1hr+ to get to work, and you have to find parking. But, you can save about 1 to 1.5hrs per day by doing this, so people do it. If there were a concerted effort to make public transport more accessible with more routes and choices, I couldn't tell you whether people would use it or not. Why? Because we got to where we are because people were NOT using public transport, so options weren't added they were taken AWAY. However, now that traffic is getting worse and worse in nearly all major metro areas, seems a public transit renewal may make a lot more sense. But, you've go to convince the car crazy Americans that that would be a good thing, especially since more and more people want to live outside the city but work there due to the much better salaries. That was a long winded way to say, YES pubic transport is bad, and we the people add to the problem with our self proclaimed "NEED" of having a car for each member of the family. We're so bad that as you sit in heavy traffic you see 1 person per car, even in those huge SUV's. Even car-pooling is something we seem to not want. I support a ban on single passenger vehicles in any major city over 1 million residents, M-F during main work hours of 7am-5pm. Only cars the size of a "smart" should be allowed with only 1 person in the car, then it'll just be emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles, and public transport vehicles. It's gotta start somewhere. |

BUT bold statement like "They RUINED the 1M because they will not offer DCT" is BS and shows ignorance...

I drove a z4 35is with DCT and while the transmission per se was incredibly good, I was bored after 10 minutes...for now my option remains the manual gearbox. Even in traffic its more fun...
PS: How many here do not want a manual because the wife/girlfriend can't drive one ?

I find it funny that BMW did not offer the manual on the Z4 35is because they said it couldnt handle the torque, but they managed to develop one for the 1M in a hurry!
...unless of course the 1M ends up with a bit less power than the 35is which is as fast/faster as a manual M3 in a straight line. Last edited by Alext; 08-31-2010 at 06:47 AM.. |

The Z4 35is is rated +15 HP and +69 peak torque (with overboost) over the 335is.

If the 1M has the Z4 35is engine (which is basically an N54 with PPK and a modified air intake and of course new software) it will be more than enough.

If BMW offered a Super Short Shift MT then I would consider it. (Like the GT3 RS) But the Factory MTs from BMW of late, have brought new meaning to ROWING your boat!!
The shifts feel like they take hours!! *yawn* PS: I learnt with Manual. I've Club Raced Manual. I can heal and toe. Not stall button clutches etc etc. Automated Manuals are the future. I jumped on board with my first E46 M3 and never looked back since, F360, Audi R8 and was hoping 1M!! Driving an MT shouldn't be an EGO boost! We should be given a CHOICE! Plain n simple! |

This is starting to sound like carbs vs. fuel injection...and we know which one is the better.
At least give a choice...Pepperoni or Cheese? vanilla or Chocolate...in life there are always choices, unless it was the color of a Ford Model T... |
