OBD2 Coding with Android - BMWhat?

I ordered a BT OBD2 module to do some coding with. Wondering what Andriod app anyone is using well, I was looking at the BMWhat app and seems to have a good number of stock codes and functions.

Interesting stuff. I thought that coding could not be done with the Wifi or BT ODB2 device. I see they list the ELM327 Wifi as one. I have it and am curious if it will work. Will test it with the Lite version on my iphone today.

I tried really hard to get that app to work on 3 different android devices and with two different cables one of which I purchased from them. No luck on my e46, e90, e82, or my in-laws z4.

They were very helpful in helping me to troubleshoot but we were ultimately unsuccessful. The app would run but wouldn't read the ecus. Hopefully the iphone app works better. Let us know how it goes.

That is strange. I wonder what the problem is.

I bought BMWhat a while ago. I haven't actually coded anything yet but all other functions of the app seem to work great. I did have to buy a cable because none of my OBDII Bluetooth adapters would work for the parameters function. With the cable I can do everything.

BMWhat is a really cool app but I have barely seen all that it can do.

EDIT: I have a Galaxy S3

They claim that I need a phone with OTG capability. Apparently none of my phones I had lying around had this.

Motorola Razr Maxx HD
Google Nexus 4
Samsung Exhibit

My Mot & Nexus are pretty main stream phones so I was disappointed that neither would work.

What USB to OBD2 cable did you buy? Can you post a link?

I bought this one http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B008YKYRBG/r...290_TE_3p_dp_1

The cable that BMWhat suggests you buy was 27 Euros plus 30 EUR for shipping to Canada so that would have cost much more. I did see some other cables that were closer to $25 (CAD) that would probably work. Also if you are from the US, amazon.COM probably has more options for these cables.

Can you let us know if it works? Sounds like it's hit or miss with that brand. I've already got one junk ebay cable laying in a drawer...

BMWhat app works 100% fine for me on a nexus 5 with the BT OBDII reader I already had laying around.

They say the iphone version is severely limited compared to android, but don't get angry at them, its Apple iPhone restrictions, not there just for fun.

Bought the App!

Ok I bought the app to use with my iPhone 5. I already had the ELM 327 Wifi adapter that I was using for DashCommand. Bought the adapter on amazon for $23.00 with Prime. Paid 49.99 for the App.

Since I already had some coding done to my car via one of the forum vendors, I tried it on my 2007 Mini Copper S.

I must say it worked rather well. i was able to code turning off the seat belt dongs, the ability to turn the windows back up with the key fob, turn of fogs with high beams and lock and unlock doors when moving. Everything worked as planned.

I had only one issue and it was my fault. I was in my garage and my wifi connect somehow went back to my house wifi in the middle of one of the coding and just hung. So I FORGET NETWORK on my house and I was good after I reconnected.

I also emailed the developer in Munich and asked him if he would be adding DVD in Motion and the ability to turn off the Accept splash screen. He said he would be adding DVD in Motion by the summer and didn’t have the Accept option as an idea but liked it. So he may be adding that as well.

Great App!!

I think this app will be a game changer for coders in the business.

In order to use a Bluetooth adapter with an iPhone, you need to jailbreak your phone and install an app that makes Bluetooth look like a Wifi connection. If not, just buy a Wifi adapter.

Anyone try this with an Android tablet? I've got an OBDII USB cable and an adapter to convert standard USB connector to the mini-connector. I'd really like to do some coding on my wife's 128i convertible and my F30 335i. I tried an older app that is primarily for logging and clearing codes on the 335i, but the cable didn't seem to work - could never connect with the ECU. I've heard that the F30 has a different "bus" that may require a different cable, so I bought one that has an RJ-45 connector that fits a network port, but I've not tried that out yet. Wondering if that Bluetooth OBDII adapter will work with the F30, as it's certainly easier to use than the cable.

Download the Lite version to do a test and see if it will work. it's free for testing.

Thanks - not worried about the software as much as the connectivity to the 2013 F30. I'm pretty sure it'll work with the 2011 128i.

Has anyone with an E82 N55 had success? I only see E82 N54 listed.

It seems to have quite a bit of functionality. NCSExpert has more but it is probably a lot harder to use. It also requires a $100 cable and a laptop to run it.

Battery coding would be a good addition that could sell some copies of this software. Putting the top down without comfort access would also sell some copies IMHO.

FYI I bought a $20 cable from Ebay and it worked fine with NCS Expert. And I also use a Mac Book Pro so I install XP using VM Fusion and it works with NCS Expert and INPA and the others.

This app is just a simple application that could be pretty handy and very portable and I am sure it will get better as time goes by for both phone version, or at least I am hoping it will.

If you need the info on the cable, let me know.

This app is amazing. NCS Expert is better yes, but this CAN be updated to do most/all of what NCS can do I believe.

I have been waiting for my cable to use NCS Expert forever, but in the meantime this app did everything I personally wanted, besides removing the idrive start up disclaimer. Hopefully I can do that with NCS.

I've used it quite a bit for both coding and clearing codes. Worked perfectly with a HTC One and ELM bluetooth adapter. The program is set up to only work with certain adapters, so be sure to check the site and make sure you have one that's guaranteed to work. My Kiwi PLX, for instance, was a no-go.
