I don't really have much need for the Nav part, but just being able to navigate through my IPod so easily was pretty much worth the price alone. I have a LOT of music. And I enjoy having the album artwork up on the screen next to my moving map. It is just plain cool.

The ease of being able to navigate through all the other systems of the car with IDrive is also very nice. I like having my toys and am okay admitting it.

The other lesson I learned when I bought my last car off the lot, is that it will almost always be a compromise and it will almost always come with some regrets. The only way to avoid that is to order the car exactly how you want it. The wait is terrible, but it is worth it in the end.

Just something to consider.

I could not describe why I got nav any better than this.

Wow, this forum is a beast! so many awesome replies thanks guys.

I would be lieing if i said i didnt want it. But the car im looking at getting doesnt have it and i honestly dont think id find a car optioned like it for a long time.

I guess when im in my car i always have my phone on Shuffle for music, and ultimately im happy to change the songs on my phone rather than the screen..

Ill report with how i go and if i get the car soon!

Thanks everyone for their input, i see valid points from both ways but i think i can honestly live without it.

In my opinion, the technology in cars will age and within a few years it will be outdated very quickly. However, my iPhone 4S serves me very well for music / GPS and with a simple USB cable I can charge and have it play music / guidance through the speakers.

Just find a good mount and you are set, I don't think I'd miss iDrive at all.

Just thinking out loud but why would anyone miss or not be able to live without something they've never had? I mean I would think that to be incredibly obvious. We can also live without 300hp, leather seats, rain sensing wipers, etc. but most of us have that.

To those without the system, be honest here... If the iDrive was a no cost option, would you get it? That should be the real question.

What I have seen in this thread is thread is those who regularly use it giving very positive reviews while those who don't justify why they didn't get it (most due to cost and very few over the functionality). What should really be telling is how few people have sold their car and now say they didn't like the system. It'll be funny a year from now when the OP is in a new thread like this shit-talking the idrive after buying the car without it (I joke). It's like the guys who see a supermodel and say to each other "yeah she's hot but probably really annoying, I'm glad I don't have to deal with that" when they know in reality they would marry her in a nanosecond and worship her for eternity.

There is another option. I believe BMW still offers the Portable Pro navigation retrofit. It uses a rebranded high end Garmin GPS in a bracket on the dash about where the iDrive would be. It won't display things about the car but is probably a better gps than the idrive. I use something like this, a nuvi 885t on the bmw bracket, and am very happy with it. It should be about $1000 installed. I have about $300 in my setup.

It is not just the initial price of the iDrive that seems out of line to me, the upgrades are also $200. You can get lifetime map upgrades for less than $100 for any Garmin. And as a navigation tool, you will be better off versus the iDrive.

One reason I use a 885t is I store MP3 files on it. The newer Garmins don't do this. I like being able to pick play lists by voice command looking at the GPS screen which is up in my line of sight. I also use my Garmin as my bluetooth phone interface. You get a lot of functionality for the price this way but it is obviously an add-on, not the same as the built-in iDrive. There are several threads around on this if you want to see it and get more information. I started one in the DIY section and there is at least one other good one in the radio technical section.

One thing to consider is that Garmin & Tom Tom et al devices tend to serve as bait for thieves. We had one of our cars broken into buy someone who thought the Sirius tuner was a navi unit. He left that but took my wife's Gucci shades... look out for thieves with great taste.

As long as I have aux input I'm happy. I had Idrive on my 5 series and it really wasn't a big deal to me since I listen to 3g radio mostly on my iphone.

Like others said, its personal taste, but I for one cannot stand iDrive. In the rare occasion that I need nav, my phone has it. Plugged into the car charger, done.

The gimmicky dial annoys me.

The early iterations of idrive were indeed annoying with only the single knob (through 2008). The recent versions have buttons for the radio, cd, telephone, and nav along with menu and option buttons. The dial is only to move around and select. They have also reverted to climate control being completely separate. These were the gripes that most had with the original version.

You shouldn't regret it at all: the car is all about driving, not gadgets... Leave that to the Japanese.

I have a '11 X3 w/ idrive and Nav and a '12 128 w/out them. Personally, I RARELY use the navigation on the X3, it's basically a pretty picture to look at for the passengers. I do love the music and ipod functions w/ the idrive, but I wouldn't say that the 128 w/out idrive is dissapointing to use. Yes it doesn't display every little folder/option while using the usb or ipod functions, but it's easy enough to use and I don't necessarily miss the idrive in the 128; the X3 is almost excessive with all the tech gadgets

I bought a 1m with it but I am not sure I would have ordered if I had the choice. Don't get me wrong I like it a lot. I haven't spent enough time tinkering with it to figure out all the cool stuff that others speak about. I drive so little that I never use or need navigation. I like the ipod controls, like the streaming music bit. I would love to learn how to better use it but honestly I don't think I would notice if I didn't have it. I certainly didn't buy this car for the idrive. I may be the only person who is impartial to it. Its neat but it wouldn't have been a deal breaker if I had found a 1m without it...

I need a tutorial from someone on how to use some of the features. I am not tech illiterate, but I tried to use the live traffic deal and it confused the hell out of me...

No. I still don't like how the dash looks, and usability is subjective. I've done software UI design for years, and theirs is still bad. It may be better than it was in 2001-ish, when it first came out and I knew the people designing the kiosk I mentioned, but it is still not good.

Seven buttons and a dial (IMO) just proves my point. My ipod doesn't have seven buttons and a dial. They had to revert to that, because they could never come up with a workable menu system. Apple could.

I paid $1500 to ship a car from Arizona, to get one without idrive. That should tell you whether I would have taken it for free.

So, he left a note that said "Sorry about the confusion. I thought the Sirius tuner was a Nav. Thanks for the shades."??

I am, sort of, unique as I do not have a cell phone. I do not require any navigational help and I do not listen to music that much. So I guess I do not need it.

You've got issues. I can't imagine giving up a 135 for a 128 JUST to have a screen that shows me words & pictures about the songs I'm listening to..
