Hmmm what to do?
I am planning on getting the 135 but was looking on the net and came across a car that I have always wanted......for about the same price as the 135
2002 BMW M5 will less than 25K miles......fully optioned. This car has been one of my all time favorite cars and considered one of the best sedans produced period. Pros: Low mileage, good condition and of course its a true ///M car. Cons: gas mileage and no warranty.......I am soooo tempted.

wow this is a very interesting predicament. the 2002 M5 is an outstandingly amazing car - a supercar in a saloon body. if it looked immaculate i'd be very tempted. it's good thing i don't have your problem or i wouldn't get any sleep!

Lack of warranty would be the big issue for me. Out of warranty repairs on a car like that are going to be expensive. And even though it has low mileage that does not mean it wont run into mechanical problems.

If you have ALOT of extra $$$ laying around, get your dream car 2002 M5, otherwise get the new car w/warranty IMO...............
I wouldn't worry how many heads you turn anyway. Buy the car for what you want. |

Well, as I read your words, it seems to me you had a plan, and now you have a tempting distraction.
Imagine you were on a trip, and while headed to your destination, you read a billboard that suggested you go to Las Vegas instead... could be fun, and you might hit the jackpot, but on the other hand, it's a gamble... and it isn't where you intended to go on your wonderful trip. Or, how about if you are about to get married, and all of a sudden Miss Hotlegs is flirting with you? My suggestion? Decide if you would kill the original vacation and go to Vegas. Or if you would hook up with Miss H who is flirting and tempting you. Or... Stay with your original plan of action... which was likely well-thought out. EDIT: I realize my post hasn't really answered your question, so I should clarify that in the past when this question has come up, I have sometimes recommended going with the "rare opportunity". If this is indeed a "rare opportunity" and the car checks out to be in proper condition... then I would lean towards getting it. The advantage you have is that you can always get rid of it, and get in this case a 135i at a later time. That said, you should still truly examine your original intentions, and determine if this is a distraction or a genuine piece of good fortune. Keep us posted! I would like to know how it turns out.

I say get the M5 unless your hearts been achin' for a small sport coupe. Its just a higher class of car all around.

Id rather see you get an o6 M3 if anything. That m5 is soo old, you would be making a mistake if you need a daily driver.Dont buy a BMW off the warranty IMO. Also you must check the wholesale value of this m5, you might be overpaying. That car is SIX years old... Most beemers are at 33% residuals after 5 years. Also m cars really dont hold better book value only market demand value, so in 3-4 years you will be stuck trying to sell a 10 year old car because you will not get anything for it as a trade.
I feel unless you are a collector or something buying an old high-end car will be a mistake, and just think about those pricey repairs that M5 is might take...

The E39 M5 is my favorite BMW so far. If I saw one of those next to a 135i, I wouldn't even notice the 135i.
I would say get the E39 M5 for sure, but the no warranty stops me from saying that, unless you're gonna mod it and/or have the money.

I just checked... that M5 is worth $25,000 in the dealer galves book. That what they would give you on a trade. You would get more for a brand new 135i if you had to trade it in.

I was also looking at used M5's E46 M3's and M Roadsters before I decided on the 135. A used M car would not have been my primary car, so I wasn't too worried about being without a car when repairs were needed. I still decided that I would prefer the new car with a new warranty. If you know upfront that repairs may be costly, and you also have other transportation available to you, then go for the M5. It is one hell of a car, and I would still love to have one. If you're only going to have one car that is your daily driver, then go with the 1.

Why is this M5 on the market now? Have you talked to the current/previous owner about the reasons for selling?
I ask because buying a used car frequently is an exercise in buying other people's troubles. Some used cars are relatively trouble-free; they're frequently the ones generated by owners who like a new car every two or three years, no matter what. But this M5 is roughly 6 years old -- not the typical age of a car you'd get from someone who upgrades frequently. Why is it less lovable to its owner now in 2008 than it was in 2007, or 2006? Or 2005? Maybe it's only been driven to church on Sundays. But I'd get a good mechanic to look it over.
