Why is everyone looking to buy so early?

I'm genuinely curious - I'd planned to buy in late September, or maybe early October from Tirerack (also because I expect the CAD to appreciate slightly between now and then). Is there a risk that Tirerack will be out of stock by late September? Or is that more of a concern with local tire shops?

Just a note, BMW Toronto just released a news letter. On Alloy winter rim packages, they give you $200 for lifestyle department, and $100 on steel. Only valid until September 30th.

We are all ordering early because last year they ran out.
Also be aware with Tirerack you'll pay $50 shipping per tire plus $50 brokerage per tire. I found this out the hard way. It doesn't work for us Canadians

Worked fine for me. With the fees, my tires from TireRack were about half what I would have paid BMW for same.

Snow tires are typically made in one production run, then run out in the early winter. It's best to order early to guarantee you will get what you want. Tirerack shows availability of some late august, so September is the ideal time to order.

I can't really follow my own advice though, because my 1 won't arrive til mid-october, and I don't want to order rims and tires early and then by the time I can try and see if they fit, it's too late to return to tirerack.

I'd really prefer a set of Hakkapeliittas but their pricing for runflats are astronomical...$245 for 16's! I have them on my mini though (15" non-rft) and they are the best snow (plus dry + wet) tire I've ever driven.

I just talked to Gill @ Tirerack. I'm a bit naive on tires and wheels and he was great explaining and making recommendations.
He suggested ordering anytime between now and end of September - after that inventory will start to be limited.
He made a few recommendations for my 128. At the cheaper end, he recommended a Blizzak 16" WS-60 & Sport Edition A7 wheel for $898 delivered in US!

ps He also suggested keeping a compressor/sealant on board.

I like how tirerack also shows you the price shipped to Canada including all of the fees etc so you don't get an unexpected bill later on.

I have been looking at something like the 17" asa gt1 with the ws-60's as well, Gill mentioned the ws-60 are a great tire geared for snow\ice...I am new to needing dedicated snows also.

Yes, he also recommended the ASA GT1's to me as an alternative choice andI am trying to decide if they are worth the extra ~$300.

Alrighty, can the folks who've already driven their 1's in the winter with their snow tire setups post their tire make/model, tire sizes and advise if they had any issues with rubbing or ride quality/traction? The help would be super appreciated guys.

I can't decide if I want to go 16's or 17's. My understanding is that the general principal is narrower tires tend to cut through the snow easier than wider tires so 16's would be preferably but not if the tires are going to rub every time you lock the wheel or hit a bump.

I'm thinking 16" Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 non-RFTs that Kvnjmpl mentioned.
Lots of guys in the US are running those on their 135i's in this forum and it's gotten good reviews so far. The only thing I recall is that a few years ago some reviewers were saying Blizzak's don't wear very well.

Hey EngPhys09, is that the price for tires only, or tires+rims?

I called my SA and he quoted me around $2700 (without the discounts) for a rim+tire winter setup for the 135. That's EXPENSIVE. Same setup on tirerack, after taxes, brokerage and shipping is around $1700.

That rims and tires

205/55/16 Good Year GW-3 RFTs, on a BMW 16inch steel rim.

You must be getting a price on Alloys. Which makes sense.

If you drive in loose deep snow a lot this is the case, but for ice, wider tyres work better. I've tried 205 and 225 wide tyres on various BMWs (E46, E90, E85) and the wider tyres give better ice performance without much difference in snow up to about 15cm deep. On deep packed snow, the wider tyres work better, not digging in to the snow and getting stuck in their own ruts as badly as narrow tyres.

Just dont buy the Michelin Xice studless.. I did, and it is the worst winter tires i have EVER owned! They still look brand new, but still i am considering changing to Conti or Nokian..

I run 205.50.17 and 225.45.17 on stock M rims.

I have the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 XL and they're fantastic. Winter was a breeze last year with them.

Great reviews too:

Well after debating and research I am going with Tirerack and Gil suggestion. 16 inch sport edition a7 wheels with the blizzak ws60 and BMW center cap, all incl $1285.00 USD so with exchange should come in at around $1450.00. The previous deal I had found out that the steel wouldn't fit my car. Oh well this should be a decent setup. The WS60 are R speed rated so 170km/h max. Then again I don't drive that fast and don't feel like loosing my car for a week and the $2k min fine at 50 over here in ontario.

Might hit up the tirerack again when the potenza RE050's are done and get some michelin pilot sport ps2's.

Think we can get a discount for 2 sets of 4 though he'd have to ship to the East and West.
How come mine worked out to ~$900 USD. Is the difference shipping costs (I was planning to ship to Blaine, Washington)
How much are the center caps?

On another note - if I run down to the States, will I be able to fit all 4 tires/rims in the 1?
Also, are you planning to change them yourself or taking it to a service station.

The total was $800 USD for rims and tires. The rest was shipping from Indiana (I live in ontario) about $200 USD then there was GST PST DUTY BROKERAGE to $1228 USD there was $9 each BMW center cap so total came to $1285, conversion with my credit card after went through was $1390 CDN better than I thought. This is cheaper than at 1010 tires a comparable canadian outfit out west and they don't give you BMW center caps. This will just show up by UPS next week at my front door, balanced ready to go, all I have to do come colder weather is bolt em on.

Thanks, Dalrx.
I called BMW in YVR today and they told me $34.50/BMW Hub Cap!!
FYI, Dan told me they pop off real easy.
For me, Blaine is only ~35 minute highway drive so I can save ~$100 shipping + any brokerage fees and if I'm really lucky, get waved through...
Will you be putting them on yourself?

Put winters on my car when time comes myself? I am going to get just a local tire shop to bolt them on when time comes. The center cap if $34.50 CDN that is ridiculous, course so is the price they charge for all their winter tire setups. I can't wait to see their face at my local stealership if i go in for my yearly service with the winters on and the BMW cap, they prob wonder how I got the setup.

I think Tirerack charged me $5 for the BMW centre hubcap and they came installed on my wheels.
For you in Toronto...how long is it to drive to the USA? I got my tires delivered just south of the border (I'm in Vancouver) and I got FREE shipping. Also...no brokerage charge and no duty charges...just had to pay the taxes at the border.

DALRX...install those wheels yourself! I already had a floor jack so I got myself a good torque wrench, an impact gun a jack adapter and a set of michelin tire bags. It doesn't take long and I bet the new stuff I bought cost's the same as one install at a tire shop. Then i just waited till a few days before the first chance of snow and put them on.
