Pinging/ticking noise when cornering
I noticed a ticking or pinging noise when cornering fairly hard on some mountain roads. Sounds like its coming from the outside rear wheels depending on which way turning.
Only noticed as had windows down and on hairpin switchbacks so relatively low wind noise. Visibly everything looks fine. Any suggestions? Thought it was tyre related catching on trim or could it be diff? Car is totally standard. |

Rock under rear brake dust shield?
I get rocks there constantly, this car seems to be prone to them. They usually fall out on their own, but I have needed to pull the brake disk to get a couple of them. It happens almost every time I autocross because our local autocross site has a gravel parking area. Hot sticky tires plus gravel equals pebbles behind the dust shield. If you can jack the car up and turn the rear wheels, it will usually be obvious which side it is on. |

I have this same exact noise on a 135i! Always on the outside wheel when cornering at higher speeds. Found this out a few weeks ago and have not put it on the lift yet.
It sounds like this, right? 02:17, Chris Harris in the M2.

Have you check your wheel bolts? I would also remove the wheels and make sure there is no corrosion on the wheel hubs, centering ring and on the inside flange of the wheel itself.
So you have stock size tires ? Sure its not a tire rubbing issue ? Some 1M's/M3's have that "cow bell" noise from the rear brake shields. It doesn't sound like a stone/pebble... but it can be just that. swagon that M2 sounds like it has a bad diff/lsd bolts. It could be one of the recalled M2's. ? Dack

Thanks for replies. Sound is very much like the first link about the bearings.
Car had new discs all round and that was last time wheels off. Do feel it's wheel/hub area the sounds coming from and not diff - as definitely sided. Not loud like the M2 video. Did wonder if maybe some copper grease on the back of hub will help. Will check torque if lug nuts. Car has only done 28k miles so would be surprised if wheel bearings related. Car is in for its MOT, so will hopefully get an answer! Dack - yes stock sized MPSS. Car does stand a lot and driven infrequently but when driven it's usually a long way. At first I thought tyre but then I heard it on both sides. Couldn't hear it with windows up. |

oh dear that would be surprising given the low mileage of mine. it has been driven hard a few times but still! guess it's better than diff or something more complicated.

£650 + labor is highway robbery, recommend finding a good independent shop or DIY.
The bearing itself is ~$320usd/245gbp for the BMW branded one or ~$200usd/150gbp for the Timken or *** branded one; the BMW one is manufactured by ***. The 4 mounting bolts should to be replaced as well, they run ~$20usd total. The front wheel bearing is very easy to DIY, takes maybe 1-2hrs with a basic tool set. I've done it several times on my 1M, lmk if you need any pointers.

Thanks for that. Final price actually more realistic. Don't know what they did yesterday. part was £245+ VAT and the bolts with £80 labour. Not cheap but much more in line with my expectations. Two year Guarantee included.
Sounds like the bearings are a weak part? You track yours? |
