Differences between 2011 and 2012
Any significant differences between the 2 model years? I read some where BMW's M Division did a special tune for the 2011 model year only. Is this true? If so, is it a big deal?

The only difference I know of between the 2011 and 2012 1 series was a 2012 LCI (facelift) update.
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=466003 BMW did change the engine to the N55 (from N54) and the transmission to the Dual Clutch Transmission (from Steptronic) in 2011 for the 135i. You could still get a 6-speed manual in any year. Never heard of a special tune by the M division for the 2011 Model Year. If there was one I'd love to know about it since I own a 2011. lol I read that the rear coil springs were changed from progressive to linear in 2011 for the 135i as well, as far as I know, that's it.

Here's a couple of interesting threads that talk about changes throughout the years for the 135i:

I think you may be referring to the PPK tune that gave another 20hp and 17tq. It’s better to just get the Dinan tune and end up with 355hp 400tq. I would say the PPK would barely be noticeable between a regular 135i.

I think PPK is known more for the exhaust pops and crackles during engine overrun than the small increase in power. That sound is addicting and makes you want to turn the stereo off and roll down your windows so you can hear it better. Also, PPK helps to eliminate the idle fluctuation, throttle lag, and lurching forward issues that have bothered many (but not all) DCT owners. It hasn't cured these issues for all of those that have them, but it has worked for some. PS - agree about the Dinan flash. I love mine and would definitely get it again.
