Try and figure this out. . .

If a standard-sized cigarette with no filter can be "rolled" out of 6 standard-sized cigarette butts, how many cigarettes can be made and smoked from 36 butts?

My teacher says the answer isn't 6.

5. 30 butts to make 5 cigarettes without butts, then you need 5 butts to put on them to smoke?

7 is my guess. 36 butts let you roll 6 cigarettes. Smoke these 6 and you can make another cigarette out of these 6 butts.

Best regards,
south

This, assuming a butt equals 0.16 smokable cigarette, and that the smoker is consistent in leaving this 0.16 unsmoked for each cigarette.

Because the teacher is/was a bum and is used to picking up cigarette butts and re-using them.

One of my professors used to hand out cigars during exam reviews. This was two semesters ago. He was a great professor though...

When researchers put the following three problems to 3400 students in the US, only 17 per cent got all three right. Can you do any better?

1) A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

2) If it takes five machines 5 minutes to make five widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

3) In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of it?

the ball costs $.05 and the bat costs $1.05. The bat costs $1 more than the ball and together they equal $1.10

Assuming x is the price of the ball and y the price of the bat. So, "A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total" means:
x + y = $ 1.10
"The bat costs $1 more than the ball" translates to
y (price of ball) = x + $1
Hence we can say:
x + (x + $ 1) = $ 1.10
2x + $ 1 = $ 1.10
2x = $ 1.10 - $ 1
2x = $ 0.10
x = $ 0.10 / 2
x = $ 0.05
I must be really bored right now. 90 minutes to go until the Apple keynote...

Best regards,
south
