Fun read... thanks for posting!

Pretty spot on in my opinion even down to how they mention the E90 M3 sedan was better for them. I agree here. The E90 Sedan looked better, was more practical, more M with the race car you could live with every day and I was told first hand by the head of M Marketing at my visit to Garching, that it handled better than the coupe.

Thank you.

Yes, interesting article. I can almost forgive them for the (&(*% need to click 27 times to read it...

Quoting the article:

"E60 M5: a hit, with severe caveats
...
<snip>
...
But really, that was just an irritating amuse bouche that preceded the excrement-sandwich main course: how often the E60 broke."

And when it broke, it was so painfully expensive to fix...

If you've never looked at my garage in my profile, have a look at my E60. I swear I haven't edited it since the day I registered.

I can thank my E60 ownership for many thrills, and many headaches. Most importantly I can thank my E60 ownership for leading me to the 1M. I literally bought it as the antithesis of the E60. Literally.

How the 1M differs:
- relatively reliable for a high performance car
- built on commodity and common (aka M3) parts, so not overly expensive to fix
- doesn't depreciate

Without owning an E60 I would never have joined the 1M club. Thanks E60.

End catharsis...

It is annoying when they chop up an article to generate clicks for sure!

I thought it was interesting that they started out with the goal of a dichotomous choice: hit or miss. Then they couldn't help but start introducing "caveats" on several of the cars, which made it somewhat less dichotomous.

One other review principle they didn't stick to: "Anywho, to keep things as simple as possible, we're only talking about the proper M cars. If we included M-badged cars, we'd have to go through all the skim-milk M Performance cars and every 'genuine M3' in a McDonalds car park."

And then they included tanks like the E70 X5 M...

Thank you.
I traded in an E90 for the 1M, not without some regret; had a terrific engine; 1M won me over with more fun! Hard to understand why it would handle any better than coupe if both set up properly; I can say that in the hands of BMW taxi driver and M engineer Walter Haubt, that the E90 could sure gobble up the Nordshliefe! Amazing the abuse they heaped on those cars; only changes from stock being pads and brake fluid.
