Engine rattle mainly when cold

Hi guys,

I get a rotational rattle noise from near to alternator area mainly from cold, & seems to be not noticeable after being out for a drive once warmed.

The noise is more like a shhhp shhhp shhhp shhhp rotational sound more than an actual rattle.
I out a screwdriver to alternator housing to listen, but you don't hear same sound, but is quite dry metallic sound, so not sure if they should be completely quite or not.

Tried to upload video of sound, but says it won't as it's mp4.

Cheers

This could be the serpentine belt, which may also indicate leaking oil filter housing gasket.

My story:
I also had this noise, exactly as you describe, very subtle and only when cold. I never heard it from inside the car, only if I got out while it was idling. It would always go away when warm. I would say it came on gradually over the past year or two. I thought it was injector noise.

Last spring, I washed the engine bay....sprayed Simple Green liberally, brushed every surface, rinsed with water. When i restarted the engine, the noise was MUCH more noticeable, so much that I could hear it when driving. I thought it was due to the alternator being wet. It eventually went away after driving for 10-15 minutes, and was never that bad again.

I had the car in for some work in August (new charge pipe, motor mounts, custom tune, and replaced OFHG) and my mechanic noticed the sound and recognized it as a slipping serpentine belt. He recommended that we replace the serpentine belt and tensioner, and the car is actually going back for that next week. Interestingly, now that thew OFHG is fixed and there is no oil leak, the sound is GONE . . . even if I listen outside the car.

****I am still going to replace the belt and tensioner! This is a known engine wrecker situation on the N54. Leaking OFHG contaminates the serpentine belt, which starts to slip and begins to wear out. Eventually the belt fails, and if it fails at high RPM, it is known to fly loose, penetrate the oil pan, and lead to catastrophic engine failure. Since my car is mostly driven on track, I am taking no chances. Sudden oil dump while at speed on a road course could kill people, not just the motor.

Ok, thanks for the input on that. I plan to check out some local indie specialists & let them have a look at this one. Don't think there is any signs of oil leaks. I've had it up on ramps & under tray off, & all pretty clean & dry under there.
I'll let you know what they find.

All I have found is a very slight coolant leak from the short hose that goes from oil filter housing & rad. I found a couple of drips on top of serpentine belt & blue crystal build up where hose attaches to the oil filter housing. The hose looks ok to me, so was thinking of just pulling off the leaky end, cleaning up & fitting a new clamp. Will I lose much water from up this high? If it still leaks then a new hose will be needed.

As long as it's cool, you won't lose much. You could use a syringe to draw some out of the reservoir if you want to have more control over spillage. I'm not sure if it will completely eliminate spillage from the hose, but it's worth a shot.

My serpentine belt is being replaced as we speak, and was definitely worn from a year of slippage. Unfortunately I didn't recognize the sound for what it was at first.

This is a timely thread because I have something sort-of-not-really-but-maybe-kind-of similar going on.

Recently, when the car is started up first thing in the morning, I'll get an intermittent chirp/squeak that is most obvious when I lightly blip the throttle from idle. I cannot really hear it from inside the car and it's pretty much gone after the car is at operating temp.

I only started to notice it when I was driving through the parking garage at work with the windows rolled down, when easing into 1st gear from a stop or lightly blipping the throttle from idle. And even then it was subtle enough that I wasn't sure that it was even my car.

I had the serpentine belt / tensioners / pulleys done about 10k miles ago for unrelated reasons, so I'm hoping that I don't have to go through that whole thing again. The DIYs on e90post make it look pretty straightforward but with the E82 I have the feeling that it's a huge PITA with the cramped quarters and all. I'm sure it would take me the better part of an afternoon just to get the fan out.

Hi, well my noise is no worse, & hardly noticeable unless I point it out to someone. Not a squeal as such like some may hear when a tensioner or belt on the way out.
I'm going to renew my top hose & the belt at least. I'm going to get a screwdriver on the tensioner housing if I can to see if I can hear the noise from there. I can't believe tensioners & pulleys need replacing with car on only 24k miles. I'm suspecting the small coolant leak on belt could be enough to cause this sound from cold, but you never know, the more I read into this serpentine belt, the more it seems very temperamental & easily upset by things lol.
I intend to drain all coolant while I have under shield off, which means intercooler off, & yes, then the dreaded fan out it seems a fiddle. Let's hope I can avoided breaking any plastic bits lol.
