Got coded/jailbroken. Some neat items to be 'unlocked' on our cars

So today was the day me and a fellow BMW coding guru and bimmerforim brother got together to hash out some items on the car. Many thanks to E90Pat, no doubt knows his stuff, definitely recommend him for someone in the So Flo area to get coding done.

Some of the things we 'unlocked' are 'cool' in nature, others functional, others just nuisances that were just aggravating to deal with on a daily basis. So from memory here are some of the many features that got done today:

1. Disable iDrive Disclaimer (eliminates silly US legal disclaimer upon every iDrive start)
2. Automatically unlock doors once engine is off (eliminates tedious double-pull of door handle for exit)
3. Window 'safety' feature disabled - allows for your windows to continue going up even if you open the door (chalk that to one of several nuisances)
4. Instant MPG reading (now part of the BC options to display)
5. Efficient dynamics (shows you optimal gear to be in, more as a cool feature to have rather than to necessarily drive by)
6. Amber lights disabled when headlights are on (i.e. only AE and eyebrow lit up - basically Euro mode)
7. DVD in motion (watch videos beyond the 3 km/h restriction, at your own risk not recommending or endorsing it naturally)
8. Door gong delete
9. Auto retracting mirrors when you lock car if holding key (or door lock with finger for those with CA) for more than 2 secs. If quick lock, mirrors stay open (i.e. so you don't have to retract them every time you lock the car, only when you need to).
10. One-touch windows close and open with fob or hand for those with CA (I believe we only had the close option from factory, not open)
11. Double frequency blinkers when emergency flashers are on (when ignition on and in flasher mode, the blinkers have a different/higher repeat frequency then that of the turn signal frequency, brings more awareness as it is a: quick double flash, pause, quick double flash, pause). Note that individual turn signala are unaffected, this is only applicable when emergency flashers are on.

There is a plethora of other options one can tinker with, for example:
1. Recalibrate fuel reserve warning light (1/8th of a tank, 1/4 of a tank, etc.)
2. Fog lights on when braking
3. Fuel station icon auto pop up on Nav when fuel reserve is hit
etc. etc. etc.

I'm sure I am forgetting some of the other stuff that was incorporated, but pretty neat all this can be done. I should mention that all these are options/parameters within the BMW modules themself, just think of them as having been unchecked prior.

Thumbs up Pat, you Da Man!

Pretty cool! Any idea if most (if not all) of these would apply equally to non-iDrive cars?

Yes, just about all will apply for a non iDrive car (with the exception of things that affect the Nav, such as the US Legal disclaimer screen, DVD in Motion, etc.)

Actually coder recommended we don't touch the seat belt gong. He was unsure if it will have an impact on the airbag deployment, and while he thought quite likely not, we both agreed not to tinker with it even if chance is tiny, not something you wanna risk. Never been an issue for me, I always wear my belt and require the same from my passengers.

One thing he will look into is whether I can import a custom splash screen on the Nav display (say a 1///M pic or whatever) instead of the generic BMW logo display upon startup.

As a side note, I was playing today with the Efficient Dynamics option (for those that are wondering why all our cars came with a big ass sticker on the driver's side rear window, yet funnily enough that option is disabled on the display). The computer suggests switching to a higher gear the moment you hit 1,800 RPM! Pretty uninspiring driving that way but I guess 'efficiency' it's what is being targeted. The moment you hit the "M" button it switches off completely (I guess it knows there is no way you are about to drive efficiently so why even try to guide you ).

I have the efficient dynamic enabled by default. It suggest gears when not in M mode as you say. Is that not the standard setting on US cars?

Nope, not standard in the US. The only thing standard is a nasty sized "Efficient Dynamics" sticker on the rear window (mine was even placed crookedly) that gets slapped when the car is delivered to the customer in the US. I dunno why but the feature is disabled on US cars, yet you get the full marketing...

2 and 9 please for me. About no: 10, Euro spec. cars seem to have the window one-touch close function coded as well.

Good thread.

I don't think I lost anything from the BC display functions. I never really used average MPG on that display as I have it on the Nav split screen, but I am pretty sure it is still on my BC options.

Best to post in the regional sub forums, that's how I found my coder as the coding I had on my 135i prior was in NY. Amazing what you can find through the board

I'd want to disable the "turning light" (The corona center that lights up when turning). This drives me absolutely nuts.

I believe that is disabled if you don't have your headlights on Auto mode. If you operate them manually I don't think the corona center light illuminates when turning (ditto for both on when in reverse).

That may not be a matter of simple recoding. It may require custom programing, in this case we are simply talking about possible options in the BMW factory logic/coding options.

On my E39 M5, I had a tune from Powerchip. One of things I asked them to incorporate, which they did, was an "M" mode memory feature. If the car was driven in M mode during last start, it will restart with M mode engaged. Was pretty cool but certainly required some extra work on behalf of the aftermarket tuner for it to be incorporated.

Any idea what hardware/software is being used to make these changes? I've seen comments about a "INPA K+DCAn" OBD2 to USB cord that goes for around $30 to about $100 (not sure the $30=$100 cord) and software named "NCS Expert 3.1.0" - apparently available for free. People talk about doing things like this with these but it also seems like the risk level is not terribly low.

When I have an issue out of warranty including when my battery requires replacement I will probably do something. If I had to do it now I would probably spend ~$300 on Bavarian Technic hardware/software (for 3 cars at this price). It would not do all this but would read/clear codes and do simple things like battery regisration.

Jim

One-touch, as in you don't have to hold the button to get the windows to open or close?

Jim, the coding sounds more intimidating than it is. Once you understand what you're doing, it's a fairly easy process. I'm extremely familiar with the coding of VWs and Audis and so I'm sure that helped my understanding, but the DIY video that's posted in the coding thread over at e90post is very helpful for beginners. Can you screw up the car? Sure, but the easy way to avoid that is to avoid trying to be a pioneer; i.e., only make coding changes that others have tried first.
