Hey all!
Where are you all buying your transmission fluid?
I asked a few local dealers and they say they have to order a case (12L) and since there are few other 1M's nearby they don't want to absorb the cost of the whole case when I only need 5L.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You only need two liters. The trans hold a little over 1.2L(from what I remember).

You can order the same fluid from any Porsche dealer. See page one of this thread for the part number.

Thanks man!
I did know on the 1.2 L but want two changes and an extra in case I'm clumsy!= )

Also the nearest Porsche dealer is 250 miles, and I was really hoping to get the BMW stuff.
Problem being all the dealers I called said they can't ship the stuff because its a dangerous chemical.
(Example Riverside in Cali has 6L but can't ship it to me.)

UPS can ship you oil, that should not be an issue. Also... there ARE Porsche and BMW mail order companies.

I use to use Carlsen Porsche in Cali for all my P-stuff back when I had my P-car.

Thanks again Dack!
I called United and Dan confirmed they could not ship the transmission fluid as it is a hazardous material (highly flammable), and that I would have to get it from my local dealer. So my local dealer said they will see if there is anything they can do, but I have to wait to talk with the parts manager on Monday.

Crazy that no one can ship this stuff. =(

I've had fluids shipped by dealers in the past, specifically by Tischer.

Also try ECS Tuning, www.ecstunining.com. They will ship it.

Ill try Tischer on Monday, their web site didn't indicate they had the fluid from searching.

Dan from United said they will ship other fluids but the transmission fluid is specifically hazardous. From talking with other folks it appears you need a licence to be able to ship stuff like this and the cost of certification and upkeep generally isn't worth it to most sellers.

Worst case I hope a Chicago dealer will get some for me as there are more 1M's in that vicinity, and Ill be on vacation there for a convention.

When I asked Brad at Patrick BMW if he had the fluid in stock, his comment was "Are you kidding? I've got 40 liters in stock"

So you may want to contact him if you are in Chicago.

Thanks a ton for this Doug.
This would be easier for everyone involved if they could get me some.

Update:
Struck gold.
They indeed have large quantities and will sell in 1L increments. (37$/L).

Thanks everyone for this thread and the help!

If anyone else in Iowa needs some before I make this trip at the end of July please PM me and Ill pick some up for you as well!

Change your transmission fluid

Although it's not covered under the scheduled maintenance, I would highly suggest US 1M owners paying the extra money ($180 total in my case) to change your manual transmission fluid. I had this done earlier today and the difference in how buttery smooth the transmission shifts is definitely noticeable. I know others have commented on this as well, but I just wanted to reaffirm how pleased I am with the difference!

went to dealer today for engine oil topup and they tried to sell me a bottle of tws10w60. i argued with them that its the same engine in the z4 35i n54t and they said no its an M engine so use 10w60.

i just want to make sure before i buy the oil myself ...the one recommended on this forum 5w30 is ok for hot weather regions like ours (outside temps in the summer are between 40-50+ deg cel) today it was 47 deg C.

is everyone actually using 10w60 in the gulf region??

10w60 is not the correct oil for that engine. Go with the 5w30.

You got things correct!

BMW AG has only approved the fully synthetic BMW oils in: 0w30, 0w40, 5w30 and 5w40 and oils that carry a BMW Long Life-1 or LL-1 (or LL-4 for European low sulfur fuels) with an ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 and API SM (or higher, ie: SN, SO, ect) rating.

All that being said... for your climate the Castrol TWS 10w60 oil might be ok to run. I just would not run BMW long drain intervals (OCI = Oil Change Intervals) with any oil in that climate.

Hi Guys

After reading this thread I went to check online to see if my run in service was done. Yes it was but at 712km not 2000km.
Now I'm pissed. Surely this isnt right?
Unfortunately I purchased this second hand from someone who was obviously not a fanatic as evidenced by his 7 posts on the forum.
What now?

Very Bummed!

How many miles/kilometers are on the car now?

Why not just change the oils(engine/trans/diff) on your dime. ?

First thing on my to do list when I get home along with the CDV.
4000km on the Car now.
My concern was that they use a specific oil for running in?

No, not that I am aware of. Even when I have gone to the factory... they use Castrol RS Edge oil out of big barrels. Nothing special about the oil.

Make sure IF they used SAF-XJ+FM for the diff... you stick with +FM (friction modifier). Once you go with +FM you should not go back to regular non +FM diff oil.

In Europe BMW says to use LL-4 oils because of the low(to no) sulfur in the fuels here.
As regards motor oil for my European 1M, I asked the dealership specifically for 5W30 (based on the info over here), which they got me. It was a German brand (yellow bottle - SRS Schmierstoff Vertrieb) mentioning BMW Longlife-04: SRS ViVA 1 topsynth alpha LA 5W-30:
Product sheet in English (PDF): http://www.srs-oil.com/coRED/_data/p...lpha_LA(7).pdf
Product sheet in German (PDF): http://www.srs-oil.com/coRED/_data/p...lpha_LA(8).pdf
("especially recommended for diesel engines with emission reduction systems to fulfill the emission standards Euro IV", oh dear, why do I read that now... ).

Recently I asked for a spare motor oil bottle "for my 1M", but did not specify any type, and I received a bottle of Castrol 10W60 (the one specifically indicating that it's suitable for the M3 and the M5): http://www.articlesweb.org/automotiv...s-for-bmw-cars

So, wondering whether the Castrol 10W60 is suitable for the 1M, and, if that would be the case, whether it's majorly uncool (not to say "plain stupid", worth a Motoring Darwin Award) to pour/mix it on top of the SRS 5W30.

US and Europe: different fuel types require different oils. All a bit confusing...

+1. Artemis, there is a list of proper oils in the relevant section of the supplementary 1M manual. Stick with that one, try not to mix different grade oils when it comes to adding oil and don't forget that BMW services at times may be suffering from the same syndroms of competence even in Germany or its neighbours when it comes to a relatively rare product like 1M
