Wow... nice work, amsfoto!

So... the 2nd gear ratios from both the MT and the AT are very close, but the final drive ratio of the automatic is definitely lower, and IMO that is where the overall difference really comes into play.

Interesting indeed. Personally, I really prefer the MT.

No, actually you misunderstood (or being rude, not sure which); but I implied that only 5 out of 6 gears are truly "automatic" and you must "manually" down shift into 1st gear if you want the extra performance. If you have to intervene; it's not "automatic".
It automatically chose to start in 2nd gear for you...sends like you didn't need any intervention to actually drive it.

Now to drive it hard you have to "manually" put it into sport mode, which still automatically shifts for you. Is it a manual automatic, semi-automatic or neither? I think this is semantics. If there is no harm to the transmission and you can still get a good launch in 2nd if it is an emergency (no time to manually put in sport mode) then I'm not sure what the harm is. But I do agree with you that I'd rather have learned this from the dealer provided material rather than by surprise. Someone pointed out that alot of other fast sports cars do this...maybe its just a matter of getting used to the idea?

Interesting...so the manual FDR is actually taller than the steptronic's?

noticed tonight when coming in the gate, it started off in 2nd without any input from me. Car in D - I've noticed this before but never gave it much thought.. but there are times it does start in 1st.. because the 2nd gear come on quick..

now, if I could understand why, when cold the car will jump a bit when you let off the brake, like it just was put into gear with out the foot on the brake? once its warmed up it fine.. I heard there was some reason, but now I totally forget...

its not a big deal, i don't get why there is a big fuss about this. First gear is only there for manual transmissions to get started. Its somewhat of a useless gear performance wise. If there was a 135, 5 gear and still have the same performance, I would rather have that. First gear is really short and is not anything you're missing out on and 4th gear needs to be longer.

Uh, yeah. Of course.
I wasn't recommending it - just stating the possible.

Understood.

(We've got some first time manual owners here though, better to make sure they don't get the wrong impression about things like this. I'd hate for one of them to burn up a clutch because they're trying to acheive the mythical 3rd gear launch. )

My last car (mildly tuned GTO) would actually pull out from a dead stop in 4th gear without a lot of fuss. That meant you could go from a dead stop to about 145MPH without ever changing gears. Pulling out in 2nd was like pulling out in first in a lot of economy cars. My little brother actually pullled out in 3rd gear the first time I let him drive it and we were moving before I realized he had it in the wrong gear (it had a short shifter that made everything pretty close together).

Still, in the case of the 135i (and most cars) I'm of the opinion that if you want to save yourself a gear change around town, it's better to take off in 1st, then skip to 3rd or 4th once you're moving, instead of starting in 2nd, just because of the clutch wear.

And just as an aside, I think the Corvette ZR1 MANUAL transmission has a skip-shift feature where it'll let you start in 1st, but unless you're flooring the pedal, it'll force you to shift into 4th gear. (I think it's for fuel economy.)

And props to the 1addicts community for turning what could've been a thread full of fail into one with some interesting information.

That's true. Every V8 car GM has built with the 6 Speed manual since the LT1 Vettes (starting in 1994 I think) has had that "feature". It gets them around the city portion of the gas guzzler tax in some cases. All the Camaros, Vettes, and Firebirds have it, as well as the GTO I had. It's easy and cheap (about $20) to get rid of though.

It's not too bad in the Vettes, even the earlier ones, or the LS2 GTOs, but on the LT1 cars it was a PITA. You learn very quickly where it comes into effect (it's a narrow RPM range) and avoid it so that it doesn't happen.

this is kind of a weird thread. its an automatic and obviously there are downsides (and upsides to having one)

if you want to choose your own gears and start in a gear of your choosing, get the manual trans.....no brainer

ROFL!

I understand it helps if you get a tranny with paddles!

Some of us were not as fortunate as all of you guys with their tranny choice. I love stick but my dad, who bought half of the car with me, is not a fan. So we settled with an auto with paddles. There fun, but I would prefer a stick.
But as far as that whole starting off in 2nd thing. Get over yourself and drop it into MS and shift yourself. Thats what I do.

6 or 5 - I don't really care as long as I have smooth power response, and I do.

I've driven stick for over 20 years and switched to the steptronic with my new 1er. I don't regret the decision, but the minor things the step doesn't give me that I miss are:
  • gear skipping - jumping directly from 5th to 2nd as I take an exit
  • notches - rowing through the gears is much more intuitive than clicking the paddles
  • neutral - gliding to a stop
Otherwise this car has so much power and such a great auto that I'm satisfied.

It auto shifts at redline anyway - put it into first and press on accelerator - shift back to D mode when you hit fifth gear. Then you get your 6 gears automatic with your definition. :P. By the way, for the people who lives in LA your 135i only comes with two gears - 2nd and 3rd.

Otherwise, everyone else in the forum accepted that it's a 6 speed auto - try to find another 6 speed auto that blips on downshift too... oh... may be you would thought if it blips on downshift then it's really a manual, but you've bought an automatic...
