I specifically told my insurance company that I did not want my car totaled out from the accident I had, and then worked with my dealership to make sure the quote for repair wasn't too high. This meant requesting the use of specific OEM but not genuine-BMW parts, which in the end saved me a TON of money.

You can let the insurance company total the car out, and then make arrangements with them to buy it back. You'll come out money ahead. The only problem is you'll get a salvage title, but that will be easy to rectify.

VERY dependent on state laws, look into this before going that route
