Does the upcoming 1M have DCT or not?
I have dig around and found this question has been asked many many times, but no one official answer yet!
I am not talking about the test mule or prototype etc, I mean when BMW sells the 1M next year in North America, what transmission options will be provided? Possible answers: 1. Yes, DCT provided; 2. No, only manual; 3. M division hasn't decided yet. Insiders (scott), please let me know! |

Article I read speculated a 6 speed auto, which would not be the M3's wicked DCT. Hopefully it's just as good, minus 1 gear.

I hope this is true. I'd miss the manual transmission, but I think I'd be able to tough it out with the DCT.

The recent Car and Driver preliminary test drive of the 1M coupe indicates DCT will not be offered.
Since DCT is currently available in the 135 it seems this statement is erroneous (in addition to other "facts" such as using the N54 instead of the N55). Scott - Please can you please clarify?? Not offering DCT in the 1M coupe just isn't logical, and acknowledging the availability of DCT would make those of us ready to put down deposits a little more comfortable with our decision. |

Like it would be such a bad thing if a car that's supposed to hark back to the E30 only came with a traditional manual box. When did everyone become so soft, haha.
(I do think a DCT will be offered, though.) |

I can't see how MDCT is not offered as it's what they are selling for performance.

DCT is great when quickly changing gears ... much faster than I can even dream of with my 6MT. My personal opinion ist that operating a 6MT gearbox is just much more fun ... and isn't this what the 1 Coupé M is all about?
A DCT would add another 20kg weight or so. This is not much, but it's at the "wrong end" of the car. So personally I wouldn't choose it. Not offering a DCT for the 1M also could be a mesaure to keep the 0-100 km/h acceleration below the one of the M3 with DCT ... and still offering 350 to 360 hp and a torque of over 450 Nm ;-) Last edited by Madozu; 07-09-2010 at 06:57 AM.. |

Scott said that the prototype tested on the N-Ring was an M-DCT car, but he was slightly vague about what would be available in the production car, for reasons that are rather obvious IMHO.
I'd be shocked if M-DCT was not an option, given the money BMW has spent developing it and marketing it, not to mention fitting a DCT tranny into the 135i.

With the M3, I think the DCT fits the character of the car well. The M3 is probably the best GT car on the market today, but I don't think it qualifies as a pure sports car. Either is quite nice in the M3, though I'd probably opt for the DCT in that car. No chance I'd want a DCT in my Z4MC. None. Even though the shifter is frankly mediocre by BMW standards, perfect heel-toe downshifts are far to satisfying in that car, and feeling that much more engaged through the twisties is beautiful. The Z4MC is very different in character from the 135i. I think with that car it'd be a tossup between the 6mt and the 6dct for me. I was very happy with the 6mt on my car, and liked it much better than the flappy-paddle auto I drove. Quote:

Remember too that a few months ago Scott indicated there would be a large personalization program for the 1M including extensive carbon fiber component options. As I recall he later retracted that statement since BMW did not have enough time to make it happen. I just think this is some pretty basic information. What is the big deal about confirming that DCT will be an option? The lack of more recent confirmation is at least a little bit suspicious. That being said, it is most likely that DCT will be available. The C&D source has been wrong on just about every detail, and DCT is available for the current 135. Also it is hard to imagine selling a car in the U.S. without an automatic/DCT option. |
