Oil leak from under filter housing -- cylinder gasket and sulev?

So we bought this perky little white 128 convertible on a whim from a guy who offloads dealer trade-ins.

I notice 6 months later that it's leaving little spoonfulls of oil puddles while parked.

Tracking it up to the oil filter housing gasket, I change the gasket. But I find this under the housing: a protruding gasket -- the cylinder gasket?

After the filter housing gasket change, the N51 is still leaking oil. I wash the engine down to find the source. There isn't a leak down the front anymore, so at least I fixed that. But there is still fresh oil down and under the intakes. Boo.

And I remember the picture I took of the protruding gasket. It didn't seem right at the time..

136,000 miles, NJ, SULEV engine -- will I get lucky and have it covered under warranty?

It is the Cylinder Head Gasket. And unless I am wrong, it would not be covered under warranty. I have never seen one do that before on any material I have read on the boards...well one that was running correctly with just a small oil leak unless it's requiring a quart every 1K miles or so.

To me it screams that this head has been removed at one point or another. I would suggest finding a good Indy shop that works on BMW's...swing by and show him the picture and the parts diagram and see what he has to say.

Have you had any coolant leaks that you know of?

No, the coolant seems stable, no evidence of anything wrong, she runs fine. Except for the driver side of the engine having a fresh coat of engine oil that collects in the belly pan. Itís not very glamorous.

Iím interested in knowing what is running through that particular block. High pressure oil? Or filtered oil draining back to the sump?

And how the heck did that gasket get mashed out like that?

Iíll follow up after Thanksgiving. I was hoping the dealership would jump at a large sulev repair.

I spent some time looking for leaks around the intake and filter housing area. I am cleaning and idling the engine. I might have found a hairline crack above the injectors, and took a photo. So would that only leak at high rpm?

Has anyone experienced oil leaking from the intake gaskets on the N51/N52? The oil seems to be pooling just under the front cylinder intake and weeping down the side of the engine under the second intake.

Could the intakes be leaking accumulated oil while the engine is off?

The OFH gasket is clean. The cylinder head gasket seems too low. The valve cover seems tight -- I've dusted it with flour to monitor for weeps.

I had a crack in my valve cover that caused a leak. It is a very common issue from what I was told, especially since the valve covers are made out of plastic.

Don't take this as what is happening as I've only started working with BMW cars. But I think oil appearing in the intake side is going to be because of a faulty CCV system.

Maybe post in this section where there is more traffic and they have "3" series cars.

jclausen over on the 3 series engines spotted in my photo that my cylinder block bolt head was missing. Pelican parts has a pretty good writeup on it.

I've got some RTV sealant on that shallow depression until I get a replacement aluminum bolt, work the old one out, and install the new one. Crazy, right?

Two photos: one from my 2007 328i with the same n51 sulev engine and the bolt intact, and the other again from my leaking 2011 128i n51 with the missing bolt.
