100K Maint roundup - Word of Caution to Potential Owners

A few months ago I decided to take my 2009 128i with nearly 100K miles to a local indy shop who specialize in european cars. No expense was spared in taking care of routine and preventative maintenance based on BMW recommended service intervals and widely accepted practices read on this site.

The point of this post is to warn potential owners that you either need to know how to wrench or be prepared to pay a lot of money to keep a 128i (or any other modern BMW I presume) on the road worry-free. Sure, you can skip some of the things I addressed, but eventually something will go wrong.

Clearly some of these items I could've taken care of myself, but I chose to let the shop do it all:

- All Fluids Changed/Flushed
- Oil pan Gasket/Water Pump/Thermostat/Expansion Tank Cap
- Valve Cover Kit
- Air Filter
- Drive Belt Tensioner/Idler Pulley

$3200.00 with a -$200 customer loyalty discount included. Yes, The oil pan gasket and valve cover was leaking.

The oil filter housing gasket was changed at 91K Miles and not included above.

I just crossed 100K miles in my 135 yesterday, but have been making my list for a couple of weeks. Fluids listed are flush and refill of course.

So far on my list:
  • Oil Change with Oil Analysis
  • Differential Fluid
  • Coolant Flush
  • Power Steering Fluid
  • Brake Fluid
  • Install rear M suspension pieces (bought a while back ago, moved and don't have room to DIY anymore)
  • Raise Coilover Ride Height
  • Alignment
  • DV+ Install
  • Replace Tie Rods (have parts already, might not be necessary)

I had my clutches in my DCT Trans replaced a year ago along with all fluids and filters, also had Oil Pan Gasket done at the same time. Coolant Expansion tank was also replaced about 10 months ago.

Unless something catastrophic or a multitude of minor electrical/mechanical failures occurs in a short time, I will continue to pile the miles on this car and pay the necessary costs to keep it on the road without worry.

It's loaded with options, a blast to drive and I really don't want to pay for a newer car, although I'm getting tired of rowing gears in traffic. I will, however, at some point pick up another two seat sports car since my modified Miata was stolen last year. It's only then will the 128's miles be slower to accumulate.

It can add up quickly. My car is in the 70,XXX range. Previous Owner I bought it from had already had the OFHG and Oil Pan Gasket replaced a few thousand miles beforehand.

I did the VCG and a Coolant Flush myself just a few weeks ago.

Anything going forward I can do myself. Next will proactively be waterpump and stat, and new hoses.

I'm including a spreadsheet with my documented maintenance history (won't accept excel and will not allow me to alter the spacing after cut/paste). After purchasing the car with 17K miles, I received a printout from BMW. Curiously, the first oil change was nowhere to be found, so I used the condition based recommendation. You'll notice some wildly different oil change intervals. I'm prepared to hear that I waited entirely too long between some of those oil changes. An oil analysis during my next shop visit should give me a decent baseline moving forward and I will post the results.

Out of curiosity, is there a particular reason why you decided to go with the S55 NGK plugs?

@Jason G when you say all fluids are including:

Oil (annually or 7500)
Coolant (+/- 2 years or 24k)
Power steering (+/- 4 years or 48k)
Brake Fluid (+/- 3-4 years 36-48k)
Differential Fluid (~65-75k mi.)
& DCT/Transmission (~100k)

If so then the pricing doesn't sound too bad. I included my own change intervals which I use to spread out the cost.

In addition to the above:

Air filter (2 years)
Cabin air filter (annual)
Spark plugs: n52 @100k, n55 @60k, n54 or tunes n55 @45k
Belts hoses @100k
Fuel filter @100k (~?)
O2 sensors - if they fail.

That will be a nice item for peace of mind. I know I have the Corvette, but I have been seriously thinking about picking up an N54 in a 135 (preferable) or 335 if I found one at a good price.

Most of any work I could do myself, and it would be a true toy that doesn't garner as much attention as I plan to off-load the C6 this year for a C7Z or GS.

I ask my brother all the time who is a sheriff's deputy why they profile my Corvette when there are BMW sedans out there just as fast or faster!

I'll be pushing 600+ on only 18 psi at 7800+ rpm redline. S55 are 2 steps colder and ideal for the ton of air I'll be moving especially with the ported N53 head.

!
True story my friend. Doing rod bearings for cheap insurance since I'm raising the rev limit to 7800-8000.

Yes. all of the fluids you mentioned were changed at 98K as seen on my excel cut and paste post. Admittedly, I probably waited entirely too long for the coolant, trans, diff and power steering fluids, but will shorten the intervals in the future. Hoses and fuel filter will need to be addressed sometime soon too for peace of mind.

Fluids are one thing at 100k. All the rubber o-rings and plastic bits also begin to degrade. I'm swapping the radiator and all the coolant lines soon ( minus the 3 turbo related ones ), currently at 105k, so hope to have all the parts to do it in a morning before 110k, along with o2 sensors.

I just did DCT fluid, 2 filters, and pan/gasket. though I am still experiencing a once a month issue where immediately on start it will not shift out of park. but turn everything off, walk away for 4 mins, come back and it's like nothing happened. It's been an odd occurrence a dozen or so times over the past 8ish months.
