DIY Convertible N55 Water Pump Replacement 135i
I'm looking for some help from users who have replaced the water pump and thermostat on a 135i convertible.
There are some great write ups and videos available on this DIY; however, all of them fall short when it comes to doing the replacement on a 'vert. Specifically I want to know how to remove the convertible specific underbody bracing correctly. 1. Are the bolts one time use? 2. Are there specific torque specs on the bolts? 3. What is the best way to remove the braces? Any tips or insights from someone who has completed this job on a convertible would be appreciated. |

All the aluminum bolts are one time use. All the bolts have a torque which you can determine either based on the size and thread pattern (hardware store) or someone else may have a service diagram. If you are asking these questions, be prepared for quite a challenge. The pump is in a pretty tight spot so it's hard enough to change on a regular car.

Actually I already have the pump completely disconnected and I have the kit from ECS tuning with all the new hardware. My problem is with the bracing in place I can't get the pump out of the bottom of the car.
I'm specifically asking about the underbody bracing on the convertible. They're all steel bolts. I just want to make sure there isn't any issue with removing them and putting them back on. I have the water pump/thermostat part of the equation handled. *Edit: Just to clarify I want to know if there is a problem with removing the braces and reinstalling them when I'm done.* Last edited by Forsazh; 07-10-2018 at 11:38 AM.. The only bolts that will need replacement are the 3 aluminum ones for the pump. All others will be put back together as you took them off. I did my pump and thermostat a few weeks ago on my 135i convertible.

Job is done, thanks for your help!
For anyone else with a convertible looking for advice I'll say this: 1. Remove the braces first, it makes the job worlds easier 2. There are 4 bolts on each brace and you do not have to remove the splash guards on the sides of the car. 3. The two larger bolts on the front and rear of the bars are torqued pretty tight so make sure you have a long handled ratchet to get them off. |

Hey man,
Glad it worked out for you. Seems to be the only post I can find on the internet about the brace. About to do it myself on my 128i e88 so thanks for the info!! |
