Car is looking great. And unique! I've certainly never seen that combination of front bumper and unfinished carbon hood. Looking forward to seeing what you have in store in the future and glad that everything worked out and you were able to stay in a 1er!

Nice hood! Mind me asking what the brand is?

did you get the hood pins? People keep saying it's necessary for Carbon hoods.

Thanks! It's a Seibon M3-Style hood, costs about a grand. I did get hood pins, I went with Aerocatch units that I'll be installing soon. It's definitely necessary since the hood is so much lighter and prone to flexing at higher speeds. It's also safer in the event of a crash. I do wish I didn't need them though, I love the clean look of the CF as it sits now.

Thanks! Yeah gotta be careful till I get the hood latches installed. I have the fog lights but don't plan on keeping them since I don't really want to wire them up. Not out of laziness, I just don't like doing wiring when it's not necessary. I'm planning to do some 1M air ducts instead, there's a good DIY on that for getting them to work with this bumper on a 135i.

Awesome. Glad to see that those hoods look so pretty. Been eyeing one too.

How did it fit for you?

Thanks,
It fits decently well but there's a notable gap on either side, it's probably 5mm or so shorter on each side. The length is spot-on though. The weave is gorgeous though so I honestly don't even notice the gap.

I still like that CF hood 'au naturel', but think it would look just as good painted, just different. I guess it would make the car look more uniform, but less edgy. Maybe that hood's differences make it look edgy enough for you. Of course it's a personal preference. I think waiting a bit and giving it a chance to grow on you is a smart decision since you can always paint it later.

Your car looks G-R-E-A-T!!

The accident happened for a reason.

Thanks Esteban, I have to say I am very happy it's worked out so well! I hear you on the "edginess" effect. I am really not sure what to do with it so for now it stays as-is. I'm REALLY enjoying it so far, every time I look at the car I grin, which is a good thing lol. I have a Rieger rear diffuser waiting for me to sand/paint it and I think that will be the last cosmetic mod after all this, maybe just tint.

Looking good. I wonder how hard it would be to pull the fog light mesh out and just have it bare. I think it would look better than just having two open holes there.

As for the carbon fiber, I had the same dilemma with my Ducati. The only rear huggers available for my 848 were all carbon fiber. I ended up ordering one and the carbon fiber was certainly beautiful. But I decided to paint over it to match the other black parts of my bike because it would be the only carbon fiber piece on the bike. The painter said a bunch of guys were coming over to him asking why I was painting over such a beautiful carbon fiber piece. He explained to them why and he agreed with my decision.

But here's something that could allow you to have both the carbon fiber and painted tie in with the carbon black. I think it might look cool to have the hood painted except leaving some striping that would be just the naked carbon fiber. Or do it in reverse where most of the hood is carbon fiber and the stripes are carbon black. I think this paint schema would look even better if the roof of the car and the trunk were also carbon fiber with the the schema carried from front to end. But I still think just doing it on the hood would look pretty good. Just a thought.

I think tint would do well on Tobias, along with getting the ducting in and the fog light grills out.

Oh, and while I'm spending your money, maybe a lip on that bumper....
(ignore the fogs here- big ass ducts would look more aggressive for sure)

Yeah I definitely hear you on that. I have other carbon on the car and would like to do more but for now it's just the hood and spoiler. I really like the 'edginess', as Esteban put it, so I'm more inclined to keep it as-is at the moment. I actually really like your idea of a stripe of some form but fear the look would be lost once it reached the roof. I've thought of painting everything except the vent indentations and the powerdome as well. We'll see I guess!

I agree! The tricky thing is finding a lip spoiler that fit this bumper lol. The CF one **********s sells is like $700!!! I'll be taking out the mesh too just need to do a lot of dremeling to get it to work correctly so I'm going to wait until I have all the parts to do it right.

Did some work tonight:

-BMW Roundel on the new hood (yay, it's official now!)
-Washer nozzle covers installed
-New rear diffuser sanded, imperfections filled with body filler, sanded again, and first coat of base paint applied
-Tossed my new front tires in the car to get them put on tomorrow morning (hopefully)

I'm thinking of not bothering with the 1M duct work for the front bumper and instead doing some brake ducting tubing to the front calipers. Any thoughts on this?

Obviously Apollo (the white fury thing on the ground) assisted quite a bit

Well, your assistant looks exhausted. I hope he earned his wages, which should be at least 10 milk-bones per hour.

He gets more than that, spoiled little dude lol

Had some more fun today!

Finished sanding the base coat and painting the new rear diffuser... Sanded and ready for final coat of black before clear coat:

20170419_093936 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

I decided to go with Testors enamel for the top black coat since it's highly durable and also flexible.

20170419_093946 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Next, my assistant helped me pick out some wood to make some poor-mans ramps..
20170419_124611 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

They work perfectly! Made them in about 15 minutes and they cost less than $15.

20170419_142515 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Now I can finally reach that center jack-point!

20170419_142529 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

20170419_142842 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

I also picked up some 1x2 for my side jack points to cushion them from the jack stands. Works just as well and cost $2 instead of $25 for each friggin jack pad adapter.

20170419_143216 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Had to make a hardware store run and saw this in the lot:

20170419_145544 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Safety inspection:

20170419_173952 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Hood latch pin drilled and installed (mostly)

20170419_191116 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Template for the latch laid out, many prayers to the car-gods were made at this time

20170419_193825 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

WEAR YOUR EYE PROTECTION. If I hadn't been wearing glasses, this would have been a very different post... Cutting disk disintegrated, brand new one and using it in a straight line through fiberglass. Guessing it was just a bad egg.

20170419_204737 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Drilling the holes for the screws after fitting the latch through the roof and cutting the inner panels for room

20170419_202447 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Assistant is on break.. How he sleeps through drilling, cutting, and my spontaneous cursing, I will never know...

20170419_202628 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Final steps

20170419_203857 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Dust ***ing everywhere but just about done!

20170419_213913 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Tomorrow hopefully I can finish the latches, the rear diffuser, and the wheel well liners. I'd have done the liners today but the shop forgot to give me half of the driver side

Car's looking good. Diffuser goes well with the car. Really like the CF hood with the black grilles and the ///M colors.

Thanks Esteban! I did the paint work on the grille myself. I didn't like how the vinyl stickers looked, and didn't want the entire slots colored, so I painted just the front third of each slot for a more subtle look. I'm very happy with the outcome, though they aren't perfect when looked at closely.
