photos of the HPFP from BMW AG engine model...
HPFP
I was at BMW Welt last week. I saw they have this cool display of their various production engines. The N55 model caught my eye. Here is a look at it. AND of our little Achilles Heel (N54 & N55), the HPFP up close and personal. I think this is interesting because many people don’t realize that the pump is driven off of the motor and not out back in the tank. I think this engine model is an N55, because I only see one turbo hanging off of it. Please correct me IF I am wrong. Engine models… N55 HPFP... HPFP upclose… HPFP latest pump #943 N55 single turbo... N55... HPFP... HPFP... HPFP... HPFP... N55... N54 & HPFP... N54 & HPFP... N54 & HPFP upclose... N54 & HPFP upcloser... N54 & HPFP... Awesome! Thanks for this, it gives us a good look at our "mysterious" engines (not a lot of people on these forums seem to have really been into this engine). Was there any accompanying info about the construction materials, like whether any of the internals are forged etc? I believe it is known that the N54's crank is forged but I'm wondering about the N55.

There was no technical info other than the label at the bottom of the cylinder that told you which BMW models used this engine. I believe there is a "sticky" on the engine specs for the N55 under engine folder on 1addicts. Its a pdf you can download. I did want to post this cutaway of the cat on the twin turbo V8 used in the 5GT and X5 X6 and 750i. There really is a lot of tech in our simple cars! IF you want to see more pics - you can look at them here. I put the Welt pics and Oktoberfest pics all in one folder. http://s764.photobucket.com/albums/x...est%20%202010/ Dackel |

Great pics. I agree, I don't think many people know/knew that the pump is right on the engine. I found out when things in my engine bay weren't routed/replaced the same as they were stock after a new HPFP (they flipped the over/under of a few hoses) and I got curious (ok, maybe anal).

So that little bugger is chain-driven? Who knew?
What does 'reihen' mean, as in reihen-sechszylinder-benzinmotor? Maybe 'straight'? I'd like to be the guy who's in charge of creating these displays for BMW! Great pics as usual David! ianc

reihen-sechszylinder-benzinmotor = inline six cylinder gasoline motor. Actually Ian I don't think BMW builds these models themselves. I remember seeing something on German TV about engine models like these. Or even some of the car show cutaway cars - that almost every German car makes has at a world class event like IAA or Paris. Most factories have an outside company do it for them. Ofcourse they are swon to secrecy! Its kind of like when you tour BMW factory... all the sub components are made by outside firms. Like the wleding robots or the moving floors or even some of the sub contractors setup shop INSIDE of BMW factories. I remember the tour guide saying that was the case in leipzig with the seat supplier. When you do tour a German car factory... they even are proud of the supplier... so their company name, address and phone contacts are hund up there on their machinery/components. It is all very German I think. These signs. |

I think there was a N54 AND a N55 motor side by side. But I am not 100% sure. I was just trying photograph the HPFP I kind of lost track what was in each tube. lol Plus there was this guy next to me creeping me out. I think IF you look at the chain ramps... you can tell which is which. :-)

When I had my HPFP replaced my tech told me that there are two pumps. One in the rear that takes from the tank and increases the pressure, then another at the engine that increases the pressure again. The one that failed on me was the one in the rear, near the tank.

I was just looking at these 2 days ago. Pretty sweet display they have there. That is the N55 that you took pictures of, but they also had an n54 just to the left of it. Although it was only labeled for the 740 and z4 I think. I guess they didn't label the 135/335 because it doesn't use the n54 anymore.

BMW AG Engine display N54 & N55
I ended up going back to BMW’s Welt today. I took some more pictures of their cool motor display. Something about these exploded engine display that I find really cool. You can see the HPFP and the casting on the crankshaft among other things. Sorry for my first posting mixup. I did a better job on these photos with the two different motors. Dackel. I have a Question for you guys.
1). Why does the tube on the right featuring the N55 motor say 306 to 326 PS (DIN.) ? In which BMW car/model does the N55 make 326 PS? 2). What is that lower pump for/do on the N55 motor? It's bellow the HPFP. The N54 motor (model) does not have this pump. ??? |

Should us N54 owners be proud of the fact that we have a forged crank?
Do you think with technology as advanced as it has become from a metal shaping standpoint...the cast piece is actually any less strong than the forged piece?

The HPFP and oil pump are chain driven. Looks like the left the chain and oil pump off the N54. Also, the HPFP in the N55 shows a XXX943. That's supposed to be the version that hasn't failed, but I think there has been a couple already. |
