has anyone bought chains? what kind

I am going to Tahoe this weekend and you never no if there is gonna be snow.. so I always like to have chains.. the dealer wants like 400 bucks for them (screw that!) wondering if anyone had bought aftermarket ones?
Also if anyone has tryed the Autosock and if that will get you past the chain check points?

Do you have the 17" all-season tires? If not you do not want to be driving on summer tires in cold weather (sub-40F) regardless of snow or not. Chains will do little good with snows as you will still have one axel without chains. A couple of years back, some dork spun out in front of me on a snowy day on I80 coming back from Tahoe. He had chains on the front (as it was FWD) with summer tires. Back had no grip so 360 was the result.

Also you may want to check if chains will work with the 18x8.5" wheels on the 135i. Not sure there will be enough clearance.

how'd the chains work out? I'm assuming they were a pain to get on with the limited clearance, but once they were on were they okay? No rubbing or anything?

Bump for feedback on these chains. After the ludicrous amounts of snow we just got in Pennsylvania, I'm ready to buy chains for both of my vehicles just as a safety measure in future.

What a pain the chains were... I bought them and there was a no return policy for any reason at the shop I got them from.. So I went home and decided to try them, thank goodness.. the computer and the book were both wrong about the chains that would fit. It took me getting the chain company to call the autoparts shop so I could return them, and then of course they didnt have the right size... So I just charged with out them and ended up not needing them after all..
I know I will some time so if you guyz find a good pair let me know....

Damn, thanks for the heads-up.

Maybe i'll just pay the gold bullion that BMW wants for its chains and let it go at that....
