About to go square 17x7.5 - 224/45/r17. A few questions
About to pull the trigger on going with a square setup as the tires that the car came with are finally starting to wear.
I personally like the look of the OEM 207m wheels on my 128i, so I’m looking at buying a set of the rears that are 7.5” wide and running 225/45/r17 all around. I have a couple of questions though: - Will I need to buy new TPMS sensors for the new fronts or can I swap the ones currently on my fronts over? - Is front to back the best way to rotate them? - Are there any concerns with rotating? I’ve heard that bmw doesn’t recommend even if you are squared and says if you do you may end up with vibrations. My current suspension set up is M3 front arms, BMW Performance Suspension, M3 rear subframe bushings. Anything else I should be looking at? It seems like a lot of guys highly recommend going square, especially on a 128i. Edit: Title should be 225* Can't seem to change that Last edited by kaputt; 04-16-2020 at 11:17 AM.. |

TPMS sensors can be moved to other wheels. They do have a finite battery life though, so it's possible they could fail before this next set of tires needs to be replaced. Personally, I plan on switching from TPMS to FTM anyway. So I will either have the shop swap reuse them, wait for them to die, then recode...Or code them out first, then just have the tire shop throw them away.
For square directional tires, back tires straight to front and front tires straight to back. For square non-directional tires on a RWD (or AWD) car, back tires straight to front and front tires cross to opposite side back.

Did you go square yet? Which tires did you get? Are the fronts too wide? Any pics of how that looks?
I want to get Michelin summer tires, but PS4S is not available for the front (205/50/17), only in 225/45/17. On my last car, I went from staggered to square and found the front didn't turn as nicely as it did with the staggered set up. Quote:

Not so fast! (see 'What did you do today...' thread)
I ended up keeping staggered and put on the Michelin Pilot Sport AS3. It was a HUGE improvement over the crappy Continental DWS 06s that were on the car. I've never driven the PS4S but the feel, grip, and response of the AS3's is amazing. |

Haha, its all good! And yes, perhaps it will be. I do know its certainly a stressor removed right now when there are plenty more out there.
