Running Fuel down below 1/4 can put strains on your fuel pump for one, and it isn't safe for you to fill your tank with running engine due to static discharge.

Hell, Even in Alaska at 30 below we are suppposed to shut off the engine before pumping fuel..lol Even though most do not.

If your car started idling rough, did you get any warning lights on the dash? That may be an indicator of the pressure loss due to gas cap off and running.

The voltages in a car vary by about 2.4 volts with the engine running. 14.4 volts running, 12 volts off. The difference is insignificant and relays will still arc just about as much. Current is irrelevant to the discussion, because arcs are voltage dependent.

There's no way possible for the combustion process to be exposed to gasoline vapors at the pump unless a spark comes out of the exhaust, and that's not happening on anything with a modern emissions system.

As I said earlier, shutting off the engine is a good idea, but lets not just make things up to pretend that it's more dangerous than it actually is.
Why do you think they say NOT to use Cell phones while pumping fuel..lol

Static Discharge Explosions are way cool to watch...Not....lol

Not really. NJ has the lowest gas prices of all the surrounding states due to lower state taxes. And IIRC, they have had the attendant pump law ever since self service pumps began appearing in other states back in the 1960s. (Although motorcyclists are still allowed to pump for themselves.)

The cell phone thing is a complete myth.

Static discharge doesn't have anything to do with cell phones or the engine running.

Sorry, didn't mean to leave you out. We explored your coast in the summer of 2008 as part of our 128i's maiden voyage - great scenery, roads, people & food. (Paid $4.28/gal. in Oregon for premium, but it cost $4.63 in California at that time!)
