What information is stored in the key?
Anyone have any info on exactly what information the car key can store? When I took my 2010 135i convertible (two weeks old and already a hole on the top) in to have the top replaced the BMW rep was able to read miles and fuel levels from the key. What other info does the key store that they can read? Thanks

I am no expert on this subject... but here is what I know for sure.
key number (No 1 or No 2 driver) & serial number of the key itself VIN Last recorded mileage or kms & date Fuel level I also believe it can store the following - but I am not 100% sure of the following: What service is due and when/miles & time/date. Driver seat memory, and mirror settings. Radio station presets & EQ settings On board computer settings 'F or 'C, MPG or Lieters/100kph, ect Any other info stored in there? |

Yes. I'm not sure how often it is synced with the car though - I took my car in for its scheduled (mileage) oil change well into it (~1000 miles past the first Service Soon light). The SA scanned the key and said, "hmm, odd it doesn't say it's time for an oil change". He took the key out to the car and "synced" it somehow, then scanned it again and it showed him it was time for an oil change.

Check the manual.. the key will store some user preferences settings:
for example: - All the short cut keys on radio are stored on the key. My wife and I listen to different radio stations. my key stores different set than the other key. - iDrive settings like brightness and split screen content .... etc you will see a list of the values stored in the key in the user manual..

At the factory tour in Munich, the guide pointed out that the keys are with the car all along the factory line since the factory also records (unspecified) information for each car as it is assembled. If you've not seen it already, National Geographic has a 45 minute video on the BMW factories; it's available on iTunes for a few bucks.
