Got a map thermostat code, no overheating though. Replaced water pump and thermostat at 64k.
Not a job I'd ever like to do again...

2011 135i. 93K miles and still on the original water pump. I do plan on changing it next month though.

Update: I changed it out at 95K miles. It was working fine at the time. Performing the task on ramps sucked big time.

Seems like all the 2011 folks are due. Mine bit the dust on Friday night. 64k. Was cruising on the freeway one minute, next minute yellow light, 5 sec later red light and no power. Good think it was late at night and I luckily happened to be basically at my exit anyways. Would have been scary during rush hour.

1050 plus tax at local indy bmw specialist, all oe parts.

09 128i (N51), changed the water pump and thermostat preemptively at 104k miles. Neither showed problems, but I decided it was better not to tempt fate going into the winter months. Fairly unpleasant job, but not the worst thing I've ever done.

2013 135is here, just today at 35k miles my water pump seems to have failed. Luckily I was around the corner from my house and able to get back into my garage, where all the coolant spewed onto my garage floor.

That's pretty low miles for a water pump failure. Good you were close to home.

2013 135is (N55 + PPK + PE w/ DCT) Waterpump failed at 34600 miles at 4 years 1 month old...No signs of coolant leaking. I just received the warning, then limp mode, then I turned off the car. I turned it back on 10 minutes later and it was all fine but I ran it as easily as I can to a dealer 5 minutes away.

That said, my car's OFHG was also leaking so they fixed that as well.

Did this just happen to you? Pretty big coincidence considering our mileage is very comparable and the timing and 135is.

I check the codes every month via ISTA, will it show any impending codes for the failure ?

I believe so. But your driving a N52... and those engines seem to go over 100K before the pumps fail. On the 135i's the pumps seem to fail a lot sooner(40K to 65K).

2008 BMW 135i
80,000 mi
paid $900 to replace

Also replaced at 50,000 miles

not covered under warranty

I just replaced my Oil Housing Gaskets after replacing the water pump. The gaskets were leaking oil and maybe caused a problem for the pump.

Nope. They are not related. But are common failures.

Figured I should update here. At the time of my original post, it had not yet been diagnosed by the dealer. Upon their inspection, it was my radiator that had cracked and was leaking, which they attributed to a thermostat failure.

Upon picking up my car after that repair, I was still getting the vibration from the fan while driving, which only happened previously right before my radiator cracked. There was only vibration present, no temp lights on dash. I made it a few more days before getting another appointment. I asked them to check out the vibration and they told me a fan blade was cracked, then the following day I found out they were going to replace the fan and water pump.

In the end, I now have an entirely new cooling system aside from the expansion tank. Thank god for warranties.
