US cars in Canada?

For the price of a base 135i in Canada you can buy a fully loaded 2007 335i with 10,000 miles on it in the states. If I were to bring this car into Canada would I still be able to use the remainder of the warranty at my local BMW dealership?

The answer to your question is YES, BMW Canada honours U.S. OEM warranty..
That said, make sure you understand the entire process and all the fees and documentation you'll need.. :iono:
Also check out the used vehicle you're buying to make sure it wasn't smucked up or water logged...

It actually won't be cheaper once everything is said and done.

add 6.1% duty because its not made in NA
add 500 + 300 for the documentation needed from bmw
add 2000 for DRL and instrument guage
add 250 RIV fee

that should equal the 5k difference roughly.

Plus 5% GST. And Ontario will probably want PST when you register as well.

And the joy of your vehicle getting an inspection done at your local canadian tire store. Seriously, they have the contract for all of canada. Saw an Srt10 pickup in the parking lot waiting for an inspection the other day.

All the info is here -> www.riv.ca

Is that $2000 gauge cluster replacement always necessary? Do American BMW's have the secondary km/h markings on their speedometers, and if they're there, isn't that sufficient?

I was in the same boat looking at us cars 335i and s4s. Not worth it IMO. The 1 has some features that the 3 dont have(ediff, brembo) and for some reason I hate used turbo cars...(not a lot of people do cool down time)and Bmw have very long service intervals 24K same as a NA car for a turbo. Audi had sludge issues with the 1.8T and they recommended doing oil changes each 16K. Interest rates sucks at the bank so go buy a new 335i or 135i will be cheaper. Also no replacement value warranty sucks Ive experienced it a few months ago

Yes, as Deuce said, it is sufficient for the speedometer, but the instrument cluster needs to be replaced not because of the speedo but because of the daytime running lights. A software fix alone won't do the trick. According to BMW Canada the instrument cluster has to be replaced to render the DRL's permanent, at a cost of $2000.

I could be mistaken, but that seems like BS to me. I thought it was like a $20 part at Canadian Tire.

Yup the situation is total BS. But unfortunately, BMW has convinced the government that all mods must be made by the dealer before giving a clearance letter(which is required to regisster the vehicle)

Here is the wording from www.riv.ca :

"BMW Canada informed Transport Canada that

ALL modifications MUST be performed by an
authorized Canadian BMW or MINI Retailer
and must be completed before a recall
clearance letter can be issued by BMW Group
Canada.
Prior to reviewing your request for a letter of
admissibility, the following information must be
provided:
- Model
- Model year
- 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
An official letter of admissibility from BMW
Group Canada must be presented to a
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)
officer at time of importation. In addition, the
official recall clearance letter obtained from
BMW Group Canada once the required
retrofits have been completed and
documented by an authorized Canadian BMW
or Mini Retailer, must be presented to the
Registrar of Imported Vehicles in order to
properly process a vehicle."

There are at least two class action law suits against BMW because of all this. One of them names the RIV as well for complicity in making it difficult to import from the US.

Yeah, I was aware of the lawsuit, but not the specifics behind it...to that extent anyway. It's hard to believe that the RIV would bend over and take direction from BMW like that. Beautiful.
