Air Conditioning Randomly Turning Itself On

I drove from Tampa to Orlando last night, which is a little over an hour's drive; after leaving dinner I turned the AC off as it had cooled off by then, a few minutes later, the AC was on again, I turned it off, then a few minutes later it came back on again, this went on for the whole trip. I turned my AC off 17 times (I started counting) in one trip and hadn't turned it on once.

After 9 times I pulled over and restarted the car (from fully off), kept going, there was absolutely no correlation to the time interval in which it went on, sometimes 15 seconds, sometimes 10 minutes.

Any thoughts before I let the guys that can't fix the lumbar issue, the iPhone cradle, or the CA take a look?

Was the "Auto" setting still on? My reading is that Auto will turn the compressor on as needed.

Using that logic there would be no way to turn the AC off ever if you use the auto setting. I think you are misinterpreting the functionality of "auto" setting - it controls the compressor when the system is on, but when the system is off, it should stay off. Additionally, I have had the car for over two months now and this is the first time it has behaved this way.

nope actually he is right, let's say you set the temp to 72degrees, the a/c control unit will do what's needed to keep it in that tempreture range, it will either turn the compressor on or off, or add heat where it is needed to maintain the tempreture you inputed. now this should only happen with the auto function and the climate control on, if you turn the entire system off (not just the a/c) and the a/c still turns on by itself then you have a problem other wise it's just the a/c control unit doing it's job.

so by "nope actually he is right" you mean, "yes, exactly what you just said..."

quoting my post "it controls the compressor when the system is on, but when the system is off, it should stay off." which is what you just finished accurately describing.

the system went from completely off to completely on with no control inputs from me.

to turn your a/c or heating system completely off, you have to hit the low blower fan button a few times. if you turn it off this way and the system turns itself back on you've got a bad ihka control unit.

As the system off issue wasn't clear to me (or mkiii) from your original post, thanks for clearing it up. Sounds like a warranty issue - hope your dealer can quickly sort it out.

The same thing was happening to my car. i noticed that the hvac was turning on from completely off while on the highway. sometimes it would happen 5 times in 1 hour. i took it in to get the oil changed and have this checked out. they did nothing for that problem but did manage to scratch my brand new bbs rims. thank you bmw.

This just started happening to me. It turns on 5 times in a 15 minute drive. It seems as though something has shorted in the electronics. I guess I'll have to take it in.

Interesting that more than one person is experiencing this exact issue.

This also happened to me during a drive on the freeway with the roof tilted open. It kept turning itself from completely off to on. Multiple times within 15 minutes. Only that day and never since.

It's the recirculate air steering wheel button. Press it a few times and it should stop doing it. When you go over bumps or pot holes it triggers the button, which turns the ac on. I think it happens because people never press that button, and with time it starts acting weird. If you press hard on it a few times, it should fix it(at least it did for me).

This happened to me a few times and what happened in my case was the temperature control knob was in between clicks, so whenever the car hit a bump, it would sort of register a temperature change (but was still stuck between clicks) and turn the air on. I just turned both knobs so they settled on a click and that solved the problem.

My AC used to turn on when I pressed "channel down" button on the steering wheel, because the circulation button is right next to it and there was a problem internally. Got it fixed under warranty; they replaced the buttons for me.

I don't think these are related issues, but in case it is, here it is

Same thing happened to me, when I accelerated. But it was the A/C knob being "in between" temperature settings. Once I turned it, it was fixed. I did scared me though. lol

This just started happening in my car. Sometimes when my HVAC is on and I set it on Auto & All, the All would turn off by itself.

Anyone get an explanation from the dealer?

I'm going to hit the recirculate a couple of times and see if that helps as suggested by timo1980

I took my car for a drive today and no matter what I do unless I completely push the buttons until no air is blowing my car blows hot air . I can push the snowflake button for AC and still blows hot air. Its only two months old and this is happening. The only thing I have done to it is install a JB4 but is was blowing cold after the install until now. Its hot out here in Germany. Anyone have this issue?
