Covering peeling rubber interior pieces with vinyl

So I already sanded and covered my steering wheel trim in matte black vinyl and it looks great. I am wondering if anyone has attempted the same on the center console cup holder area?

If the rubber part is removable from the rest of the console (after removing the console from the car) I think it would be pretty easy with patience and a heat gun.
