Nasty paint chip repair

So I'm about to begin my summer detail and was debating the best course of action on this nasty little chip. It's about a quarter of an inch in size and still chipping/lifting in the lower right corner. I plan to carefully remove that and then fill the chip.

Still debating whether to treat it like a normal stone chip, ie fill with touch up, clear, and level but I'm concerned it will look awful given how large it is.

I also have some leftover oem paint in a spray can so I was contemplating taping off the surrounding area and spraying the chip to give a more level finish.

Is this a bad idea? Anyone successfully repair a chip this large before? Any advise is appreciated thx

I would try filling with touch up and leveling. I would be willing to bet the paint has some sun fade, even if it's minor, and would be a more obvious mis match due to larger area if you sprayed. You'll also need to level the area that was taped off.

If you haven't already you should have a peek at dr. Color chip products. They work quite well in my experience for small to moderate chips.

Went ahead and masked off the surrounding area and sprayed it with my rattle can, put some clear over that and then leveled it the next day. Came about about as well as it could have. Pretty happy given how bad it was. Think it came out much better than touch up would have, just too big of a chip for that approach I think.

Hi and thanks for sharing. Would you mind posting a pic of your results? I have one or two almost that size that I have been thinking of fixing myself. I was going to use the touch up and level with pencil eraser sized micro abrasives. Glad you are pleased with your results.

Here you go.

Not perfect but not bad considering how big of a chip it was. Not nearly as noticeable and it's now sealed and won't continue to grow.

Color/metallic match is pretty good. Looks like it would look great with a little more clear coat fill and level. Nice job.

Is that bare metal? If so you need to fill it up with primer first, then use the matching basecoat.

So you prime stone chips too?

If it's down to bare metal yes else the base coat won't adhere, or that's been my experience at least

Now I clear bra bumpers, mirrors and side skirts lol

Yeah, I don't think it was down to the bare metal. The flash in one of the pics may have made it seem that way but the base adhered perfectly well. Added a layer of clear and then leveled.
