Want to know why the 1M is only offered with a manual transmission? Ask the M boss, Dr. Segler:

Or, you could use a search button and notice that this topic has been rehashed and well discussed in the past.

If that's the case then why have they essentially ordained the 1M as current successor to the original M3, placing it in alongside the original? Does anyone make these ridiculous statements about the M5 or M6 vs the M3? Clearly the m5/m6 are the more expensive vehicles. I guess they forgot to dumb the m3 down enough because it's faster than the m5. |

M5 owners, not the ones putting videos on youtube but the majority who buy M5 just because they can afford it, care less there's another M that's as fast as their M5, for less money: the M3. Why? Because they drive a "big fat M5 : respect!" as quoted from Vicky from 5th gear. M3 owners are in more for the speed/performance, than for the status/show. Their ego hurts more if baby M would be as fast. My 2 cents |

I'd like to see the new high boost 3l TT diesel from the X6XDrive40 in a 1 series, 306PS and 600NM.
That would beat the 1M, M3, M5 and M6 to 60..... Oh no, but we can't have that can we..... |

Also keep in mind that M3 and M5 owners are more likely to have a deeper pocket, translating to high revenue for BMW. There's no way BMW will be willing to jeopardize a good thing it has going.

Having been an M5 owner with a gazzilion posts on the various M5 boards, I can attest to this. The average M5 owner/buyer does not particularly care if the M3 will outpace the M5 as much as he cares if the RS6 or E-klass AMG will do so. You are dealing with a totally different demographic in terms of age, income bracket, family priorities, perception of needs (e.g. plushness and luxury vs. strippedd down raw to the bone experience), etc. etc. FWIW I can tell you that there are not gonna be many exisiting or ex- M5 owners that are gonna jump on the 1 ///M. But the buyer group of the 1 ///M and M3 is indeed very similar, and the lines are very much blended. Hence why you have all this 'polarity' (a polite world for trolling).

BMW normally quote a 50-75mph time in 4th gear on their web-sites. Somehow that box has been left blank on the 1M. Maybe they didn't have enough spare time on the rushed development program to time it - or maybe, it's quicker then the M3

Could very well be, at that speed/RPM, it is all about TQ, which the 1 ///M has a 75 lbs advantage (counting the overboost that will kick in)
