Debating Extending warranty.

Currently eyeing a 2013 135i manual with 38,xxx on the clock. The car looks in great shape however I'm debating the warranty extension which runs like $3500. Did some research online and of course my gut is telling me that I should take it also the car has been in the states a very short time so of course nothing shows up for under service history since it wasn't serviced here. The car has every possible option except HK and of course is a manual. With the number of mint low mileage manual 135s shrinking each year I'm really struggling here.

Any input would be highly appreciated.

If you want more details about your warranty you can download the service book:

Thanks for the link but I was interested in the service history the car has had. It spent the last 3 years in Germany(military sale) so the dealers here show nothing.

It's not like BMW does much servicing. In 38k probably had two oil changes.

True dat. I ask the sales guy to contact the previous owner and ask. We'll see.

That $3,500, what term does that give you (time & mileage)? We paid about $2,100 for our E82 extended through a 3rd party, it has almost paid for itself in just over a year.

I got a 3rd party when I purchased my car. I think it was $3,200. Ive had repairs for about $1,700 in 2 years so far. I think you can go either way. Save the money for repairs or buy the warranty. The problem is 1 little thing can cost you $1,000+ with our cars.

N55 tends to be a more reliable engine? but the same electric water pump...so if you have a spare car then you can do your own service, if not then get the EW.

It's a huge gamble. I gambled on no extended warranty and super glad I did. The only issue I had with the car for the duration of what would have been my "extended warranty" coverage period was an OFHG leak. If I had done the dealer service on that it would have cost me a whopping $700. So, based on my quote of ~$3700 for 3 years (I think, hard to remember) I would have been out around $3,000.00.

You can go either way. If you're comfortable and willing to do a little work yourself, then I say stick the money in the bank for a rainy day and carry on. Takes quite a bit to rack up $2500-3500 worth of warrantable repairs.

That said, you don't know the cars history so at the minimum get a thorough PPI done by a mechanic you trust and have an oil sample analyzed if you can.

$3500 covers it for 3 years and 60k miles.

Honestly I think I'm going to wing it, I can get parts at wholesale and we have some very good local European shops around here.

My car hit 4 years a couple weeks ago and I had the same debate.

My car had 40k generally trouble-free miles on it.
My intent since I bought the car new was to get the extended warranty, so I got quotes similar to yours. However even the Platinum plan didn't cover my convertible top.

I baby it and don't drive it a lot (maybe 10k/yr.) and its a second car for me.

So I decided to roll the dice and hope I have less that $3500 in repairs that would have been covered in the next 3 years. Remember, not everything is covered.

So we'll see how it goes!

Just get the mechanical warranty and shop BMW dealers for the best price. Remember you can buy this item from any dealer and do it over the net. You'd be surprised the range of prices on this.

ASG Warranty

My warranty covers blown tires, rental car when the car is in the shop (its my daily driver), towing, and ran $2800 through my credit union. Remember, many 3rd party warranties do have some negotiating room.

Under warranty I have had my convertible top replaced, all 6 injectors replaced (3 and then another 3), rear differential, radio, a wheel bearing and a few other minor repairs. I would hate to have had to pay out of pocket.

My 1er is a 2011 that I got in Oct. 2010 and I passed on an extended warranty a couple of years ago. Put the money away for repairs and haven't had to use it yet. Granted, I don't have a ton of miles.

Those N54 injectiors are a bit pricey.

I also forgot to mention that it still carries the original warranty til 11/14/16. Plenty of time to save up some $$ for a major repair.

Things that may likely need replacing under extended warranty- vanos valves, water pump, oxygen sensors. I extended my warranty to 100k when I bought the car - it paid for itself. Now approaching 150k.

Under warranty I've had my ECU replaced and just got my DCT replaced. Ecu is about $2k which is nearly the cost of the extended/CPO. The DCT is $10k. I'll let you guess who came out on top here.
