Anybody know if it is a direct swap? Would it need coding? The gearing is different between an M3 and a 135i so wouldnt the tach be off?

If switch the cluster on any BMW it needs to be coded to get the correct mileage. Without, you get the little mileage tamper light.

The cluster on the 1 has smaller diameter dials, and therefore smaller needles. One would assume that this cluster wouldnt physically fit into the 1 dash, let alone function.

The M3 e9x cluster fits just fine in a 135i. Thorsten from www.car-coding.de has done many cars over here with this mod. You will need the M3 speedo/cluster coded to work for a six cylinder motor ( N54 or N55) though.

here is the M3 speedo cluster in Thorsten's 135i "performance". Everythinbg will work except for those shifting lights built into the gauge tach/ring. But the cold engine red line will change as the engine warms up.

I'm thinking of picking this up but I'm trying to confirm that the JB4 steering wheel controls will still function because their is obviously no M3 speedo option for the JB4 as of yet to choose from when you first set up the JB4. Once I confirm this I will make my decision.

I think you need coding for the tach signal to work properly: 8 cyl vs 6 cyl. That would be my best guess.

but you need a BRAND NEW gauge to get it coded!!

you can`t code a used one in your car!!

I had the m3 gauge installed in my old 130i and I have the 1m gauge installed in my current 135i!

Another thing is that it has a different shape!
You have to sand down the sides and the lower part of the cluster to make it fit!

There are lots of places over here that can do that. Here is one near Frankfurt...

http://www.wsm.de/index.html

Or just look on Google for: "Tachometerdienst" or "Tacho dienst"

Man, if the lights worked it would be awesome! Dackel have you seen them working on to get the lights functional?
