Limp mode

So I need some advice. Driving home on highway and twice the 1M has gone into limp mode, ie engine malfunction, reduced power warning. This was during normal driving. Car has no mods. Dealer says they cant figure it out. Cant they just pull the codes? Coil pack or maybe charge pipe (but didn't hear anything unusual). Plugs changed about 4k miles ago. Car has 33k miles. Any suggestions? Really need to get rid of this 328i loaner!

They should be able to identify it by the codes .. I suspect charge pipe failure .

Did the car do anything funny other than reduced power? A funny noise / vibration ?

If the car threw the EML error the car should have thrown a code. From what I have seen, it's quite easy to spot a cracked charge pipe.

I had an intermittent limp mode problem over the summer. It progressed into full limp mode after a few days. The car started roughly and the cooling fans were blowing constantly.

It turned out to be the HPFP.

Seems like the other top culprits are the charge pipe and the knock sensors.

All are easy fixes.

Maybe the hyperlinks of issues #5a, #5b and #5c of the 1M issues log sticky could shed some light: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...27&postcount=1

Were you driving very "spiritedly?"

Happened to me on the track. Codes indicated turbo issues (can't recall exact numbers).

I was pushing the car pretty hard though; never had any problems w highway driving.

There was a BMW technician at the track who reset it and told me not to worry about it. The car was fine on the next run.

I told the dealer when I was there for a brake issue a few weeks later. Apparently it is something to do with overboost. Basically the turbo runs out of air, registers a fault, and the car goes into limp mode. When the car cools down, everything goes back to normal.

Haven't been back to the track since. My baby is hibernating through the New England winter!

Gross incompetence! I'd find a different dealer or, at least, a different tech.
