You would need to go visit a dealer and they would load the CDroms. Your car doesn't have a USB HD system right? For later cars with the USB port in the glove box... you simply can go online or to a 3rd party and pay/download the new maps, save it to a USB stick and then insert it into the glove box port.

New map updates come out quarterly now - I believe.

I've recently looked at doing this. Have found downloads or actual USB drives for sale for not much money, but, am confused about do I need an FSC code (not so cheap).

Yes, you will need the code to make those maps work. There are a few forum sponsors who can offer you this service. Try looking on the e90forum pages.

But the OP has an older Navi system... so he needs to have the maps loaded on his car's trunk mounted CDrom, then the system will update. On the newer cars with a hard drive system and the glove box USB port... its much easier to do an update.

Yea my car is an 09. Can only the dealer do it or can an independent shop do it & how much does it cost to update?

I don't have Nav in my 135i. I have a TomTom for that. But for the new BMW hd based system... map updates are under $60 I think.

http://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/47...ATE/?Year=2016

or from a third party vendor...

For the OP with the old CDroms... I think your looking at ~$200 for the CDroms. Your best bet is to ask a dealer how much they charge.

I got my update from another vendor in the forum and it works perfectly. I am considering replacing the hdd with ssd to speed it up.

I remember reading a thread where someone tried to change out the spinning disk hard drive and it wasn't an easy transfer. Cloning the data on the drive was a challenge and I seem to recall something else being a problem. I don't remember where I read about this though.

My alternative is using Waze on my Android phone pumping video to the stock nav screen. Better traffic situation awareness along with police and speed/redlight camera warnings. Also, no need to pay for regular map updates.

I did a write up just over a year ago on installing the Bimmertech rear view camera retrofit with the SmartView box:

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1207855

You'll see a picture in that thread where I was mirroring the Bimmerpost webpage on my Android phone to my nav screen. Absolutely love the system. I used at various times this week while I was out visiting clients and was able to get around the stupidity that is DC Metro traffic.

Very nice but that looks a bit more invasive than I want to get with my car. Honestly, I found a CPO M4 and wondering how bad it would be to swap from the 135is to it lol....most likely won't do it but dang it's nice.

I thought you just needed to copy the contents of the 12gb drive onto a small ssd. I thought you just had to pull out the bottom of the center stack.

Actually it's not as bad as it appears especially if you just want the screen mirroring and don't care about having the rear view camera. I tore apart the right side of the dash/glovebox because I had to run the camera wiring through that side of the car. If I wanted just the screen mirroring, all you really need to do is drop the bottom cover under the steering column, the center dash, and the nav screen. BTW, the screen mirroring also sends audio to the car.

As for the hard drive, if I recall correctly, it's some wierd file system on it. It's not just pulling the bottom of the center stack. You have to pull the radio/CD/DVD part too as it's all one unit (CIC). Look at the pics in my write up for the Bimmertech rear view camera again. You'll see the radio unit/CIC extends down to the blank panel. I thought it was empty behind it and was going to be able to install the multimedia unit in that area. I was unpleasantly surprised when I pulled the trim off and saw the CIC extends into that space.

So I'm assuming that for a 2013 135i we have the CIC navigation system and not the NBT? If so we want the "premium" upgrade for CIC correct?

That's right, you've got CIC generation iDrive and you want North American Premium 2017-1. I just did mine yesterday, second time around.

From http://bmwnavigation.net/ . There were several third party sites I found in a search but some weren't quite clear what you were getting. If it was just the files or if you got the FSC code too. This was $50 for both which is quite a bit less than the dealer would charge. I'll let you know how the update goes this evening.

Got the new maps installed this morning. The first FSC code didn't work but the communication with the seller was great and he got me a new code that worked. Install took about an hour.

I second that thought for using Waze. Good for directions, navigation, traffic and speed traps. My 135i doesn't have the Sat Nav option and I purposely steered clear knowing that updates would be an issue. On the downside I now have a large ashtray on my dash.

I know this is an old thread, but thank you Dack, the 125i i am picking up is a 2012 and never had a map update and has a 128GH HDD. It has the CIC so i need to check which one i have (premium, motion or move) and basically upgrade it for €39,99.
